Why you’ll love this trip
Follow the most scenic section of the coastal Fisherman’s Trail, taking in gorgeous natural views of Portugal’s cliffs, beaches and ocean.
Delight in Portugal’s bountiful coastline and enjoy a fresh seafood lunch in the village of Almograve with ingredients from the local fish market.
Walk to Capela de Nossa Senhora do Mar – a small chapel overlooking the ocean – and enjoy the sunset, perhaps with a homemade picnic.
Rest your legs or keep the momentum going during a free day in Aljezur – a popular hub for surfing, hiking, stand-up paddleboarding (or chilling on the beach).
Hike to Cabo de Sao Vicente – mainland Europe’s southwesternmost point – as your local leader shares stories of its maritime, Phoenician and Roman past.
Is this trip right for you?
This trip involves plenty of walking over varied and sometimes steep terrain and is best suited to travellers with a good level of mobility. Good footwear and clothing for all types of weather is recommended. Details on physical activities can be found in the itinerary.
You will be passing through remote and undeveloped parts of Portugal on your journey so you must bring a day pack to carry enough water and snacks for each day.
On this trip you must pack as lightly as possible because you’ll be expected to carry your own bag. Although you won't be required to walk long distances with your luggage (max 30 minutes), we strongly recommend keeping the weight under 15 kg (33 lb). You'll also need a day pack/bag to carry water and a camera for daytrips.

Exceptionally scenic coastal route! Doesn’t get any better than this. Majority of hike is high on cliff edges, on sandy paths. Recommend purchasing hiking gaiters to keep majority of sand out of shoes along with light shoe-height cross-trainers for this type of terrain. Poles weren’t necessary but helpful a day or two for steeper sections. Our guide, Oswaldo, was very experienced on this route and easily handled or explained the balance of logistics. 75% of our group were over 55 and handled all terrain really well. Fitness level is important. Go for it if solo and curious! Our guide really was a successful part of the whole experience!

The Fisherman's Trail was one of the most beautiful walks I've ever taken. The trail goes along cliffs with views of the beaches and ocean below, though forests, and sometimes descends to the beaches themselves. Most of the trail is away from any towns and villages, with wide open views - but there is just enough "civilization", stratigically placed, to stop for a snack, lunch, or of course dinner and a hot shower and comfortable bed. Our guide was excellent, explaining about the trail itself, the ways in which the various fish were caught or harvested, and the industries and lives of the people in the villages and towns we passed through.

So glad I did this hike with Intrepid. Amazing landscapes, with dramatic coastlines and beautiful ocean views. Not too much incline, but hiking on sand with lots of sun exposure can be tiring. Our guide, Matteo, was wonderful! I highly recommend this trip, and I can’t wait to visit Portugal again.

Interesting and enjoyable way to walk the Portuguese coast- challenging walking on the sand and rough terrain but achievable. Fabulous food (if you like fish!) and we had a great, enthusiastic tour leader in Matteo!

This is a pleasant walk for five days, reasonably flat with some road walking and rocky terrain. The villages we stayed in were very quaint with restaurants offering beautiful and authentic Portuguese food. Matteo our guide was wonderful making the trip even more enjoyable.

This hike is a fun and not too challenging hike. Some long days but so worth the beauty and surroundings. Loved our guide Matteo

This was my first Intrepid experience and it exceeded my expectations. I truly enjoyed the small group dynamic, and I felt that a week on The Fisherman’s Trail was the perfect amount of time. Our team leader also helped make the experience fun, entertaining and memorable.

One of the most beautiful trek in Europe. Great way to learn about Portugal culture. Our guide Mathéo was absolutely the best and went way beyond his duty to make sure we had a great trip.
