Trip Informations
The Larapinta Trail is arguably one of the best desert trails in the world, exploring Tjoritja (or the West MacDonnell Ranges) in Central Australia. Take it on with this six-day trekking trip, where you’ll hike across snaking riverbanks, open desert plains and towering mountains, spending each night in a private campsite on Aboriginal land. Cool off in bright green swimming holes, discover the Indigenous history of the area with your Aboriginal guides and hike across peaks scattered with diverse flora and fauna. Take in sights like Ormiston Gorge and ascend to the top of Mt Sonder. Witness the vast red desert and end the days camping under a blanket of stars.
Why you’ll love this trip
Hike the red slopes of the West MacDonnell Ranges (Tjoritja), gain insight into First Nations history and visit sacred sites like the Ochre Pits with your Aboriginal guides.
Take in views of the rugged and diverse mountain range while you walk across Serpentine Ridge, then cap your experience with the summit of Mt Sonder.
Camp underneath the breathtaking Milky Way at your private campsite on Aboriginal land, far away from any light pollution.
Find respite from the Australian sun at one of the refreshing swimming holes at Ormiston Gorge.
Opt to walk through Standley Chasm – this 80-m-tall gorge is a sacred women’s site for the Western Arrernte people.
Is this trip right for you?
You’re in for a challenging walking trip and an excellent level of fitness is essential. You must be prepared to trek for multiple hours and up to 20 km a day with little shade, climbing peaks and ridges over uneven terrain with loose rocks with a daypack carrying a minimum personal supply of 3 litres of water. There are quite a few sections where you have to take big steps, so ensuring you are well trained is key. You may also want to consider bringing walking poles. The total distance walked on this trip exceeds 60 km. We walk different sections of the Larapinta Trail each day, rather than the entire trail from start to finish.
On this trip, you will be camping under the stars. Tents at our private campsite on Aboriginal land are set up for you already. All you need to bring is your own sleeping bag.
Remember that between June and August, night-time temperatures can drop below zero, so you must bring a sleeping bag, suitable to the conditions. Please familiarise yourself with the weather conditions that are to be expected at the time of your trip. You can also hire a sleeping bag from us at an additional cost. This must be requested with your booking agent no later than 14 days prior to departure.
It is very important that you advise us of any dietary requirements and allergies at least 2 weeks prior to departure. We need this information well ahead of time to be able organise catering for the trip. This trip’s remote location means that some food items will not be available on short notice, and once the trip has commenced changes to dietary requirements are not possible. Please also advise us of any medical conditions at the time of booking and bring along any personal medication. Please note that if you require urgent medical attention during the trip, it may take several hours or more for emergency services to attend the scene and take you to a medical facility.

ACCOMMODATION
For our camping nights, a tent and a stretcher bed with a swag (an Australian style sleeping mat) is provided. Single travellers will be allocated their own tent. Towels are not provided. ELECTRICITY
The camps are solar powered, supplemented by a generator if required, and there are a number of outlets that can be used to charge personal devices. We recommend bringing a fully charged power bank to recharge your phone or camera, rather than relying solely on power at the camp.

If a person requires urgent medical attention during the trip, it may take several hours or more for emergency services to attend the scene and take you to a medical facility. If you have any pre-existing medical issues that will affect your ability to complete the trip or may have an impact on other guests’ experiences and you do not disclose these prior to the departure, we reserve the right to remove you from the trip.

This trip is well organised and the itinerary takes in some of the most magical hikes of the Larapinta. The tents and stretcher beds were of a high quality and each person had their own. David and Anna were fantastic hosts and provided a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm. I would highly recommend this adventure.

The Larapinta trail is hard but pleasant work as the magnificent and majestic scenery is unique and rich with cultural significance. Stunning views and varied environments, along with culturally rich meaning make this a memorable trip for anyone daring to take part.

This trip was absolutely brilliant. So well organised and hit that sweet spot hiking as it was challenging but very doable (if you hike 10kms semi regularly with hills!) The larapinta trail is beautiful - remote with vibrant colours of orange against the very blue sky! Loved swimming in the gorge too plus the sunrise hike up Mt Sonder was epic and unforgettable (in a good way!) Loved hearing from the local Aboriginal guides and having a special welcome to Country.

Larapinta with Intrepid was the most incredible experience. Exceeded all expectations. The guides were amazing, and it was fantastic bonding time with my son. Great mix of enjoying the outdoors, slightly roughing it and digital detoxing, but also being incredibly well looked after.

After several solo hikes this was the my first intrepid group hike. It is challenging in places and I was so pleased to be in a small group with like minded people. The Larapinta is an amazing experience and to share the experience with Jungala, Matt and Geoffrey, who shared some local stories and knowledge of Country will be a special memory.
