Trip Informations
Why you’ll love this trip
Visit the well-preserved archaeological site of Knossos – the former capital of Minoan Crete. Explore the ruins of Europe’s oldest city with your leader and discover the hundreds and thousands of years of history embedded within its walls.
Join a local family on a boat trip around Crete's shorelines. Learn about the region’s history and maybe try some local dishes like fresh seafood or bougatsa for lunch.
Explore Chania on an orientation walk through the colourful port town. Discover one of its most loved commodities during a wine tasting and maybe join a local workshop to learn to bake kalitsounia (pastries).
Unwind in the small fishing village of Sougia. Maybe walk along the coastal trails, take a swim in the warm waters or simply relax on the beach with a cold drink in your hand during your free time.
Hear stories about the area’s historic past from your local leader. Maybe hike to the Entrance of Agia Eirini Gorge, look for endangered Cretan wild goats or relax on the beach in Sougia.
Is this trip right for you?
Summer temperatures in Greece can reach up to 40°C, which can be uncomfortable for those not used to the heat. On the other hand, early in the season (April) many businesses may still be closed and the weather is unpredictable, however you may have some of the major sights of the Greek islands almost to yourself. Please consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability for that season.
Please be aware that some of the Greek Islands are very hilly and mountainous, which means lots & lots of steps are an inherent feature of the landscape. You will have to be able to easily lift your luggage and carry it up and down stairs and inclines. Also, stone streets become very slippery when wet. Some people may find Greece's topography very demanding.
On this trip you must pack as lightly as possible because you will be expected to carry your own bag. Although you won't be required to walk long distances with your luggage (max 30 minutes), we strongly recommend keeping the weight under 15 kg. Most travellers carry their luggage in a backpack, although an overnight bag with a shoulder strap would suffice if you travel lightly. Smaller bags or backpacks with wheels are convenient although we recommend your bag has carry straps to accommodate the cobbled streets, uneven surfaces, stairs and steps you are likely to encounter while carrying your luggage. You'll also need a daypack/bag to carry water and a camera etc for daytrips.
Itinerary
Tour the ancient histories and sun-kissed shores of Crete
The island of Crete has so much history and natural wonder to offer, and in seven days on its shores, you’ll see what’s known as Europe’s oldest city, taste some of the region’s best food and wine, and discover some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Visit the Knossos archaeological site and unwind in the secluded seaside village of Sougia. Join a boat trip with a local family through the region’s islands, sip wine in the vibrant port city of Chania and indulge in local dishes like fresh seafood or bougatsa (warm flaky pastry with creamy semolina custard or cheese).

Where do I start? This was my first intrepid trip and first real solo trip. It was so much fun! I feel like I got a better sense of the culture and saw parts of Crete I’d never have seen without intrepid. The homestead meal was AMAZING. 10/10!

An absolute joy end to end, I ate so much delicious food and saw all the many many sides of Crete, it's people and culture. Gabriela 'Gabby' was the best your guide I've ever had and I've travelled a lot! Absolute highlight was the Lissos hike and the rural accommodation stay and home cooked food. τα λέμε ξανά! ❤️

Excellent trip. Our leader was awesome. The free time, which on paper seemed to be a lot, was perfect. Both for doing your own thing or for going to the hotel and taking a break. My trip was even smaller than the max, and all our dinners were as a group with the leader. Really wonderful experience.

Wow - we loved this trip of Crete. We spent 3 weeks in Crete and incorporated this 7 day intrepid tour into our itinerary. It was a perfect fit for us as we didn’t want to drive but wanted to see more of the island that public transport couldn’t offer. We got so much more though and feel like we have experienced the authentic local Crete. Thank you Intrepid 😁

Excellent way to immerse yourself in culture, activities and sights. There is not a constant lecture format and endless sitting on buses.

I would highly recommend Intrepid as a tour company. Each time I have joined an Intrepid tour the Itinerary & the professionalism of the tour leaders has been outstanding..The tour leader Angelina for The Crete tour made my travel experience the best & was beyond my expectations. The accommodations were excellent with breakfast provided The drivers were professional & I felt safe at all times The guides that we joined in certain areas for extra historical information were interesting & again proud to share their knowledge. Looking forward to my next Intrepid experience in the future.
