Trip Informations
Set off on a 14-day adventure that will show you a side of Thailand that few international travellers see, combining the vibrant and diverse cultures and mountains of northern Thailand with the lesser-known island in the south. Start in vibrant Chiang Mai, full of temples and delicious cuisine, then visit the highest point in Thailand at Doi Inthanon National Park for a spectacular hike through the cloud forest. Meet with Shan, Kayan and Lahu people with visits to their communities to learn about their culture and share meals together. Search for wild elephants in Khao Yai National Park, then seek out the bright lights of Bangkok before wrapping up this unforgettable journey on the white sands of Koh Ngai Island.
Why you’ll love this trip
Be immersed in the rich culture and traditions of Thailand with visits to a few small villages. Weave bamboo leaf hats with Tai Yai (Shan) villagers, learn about how a Kayan village is transitioning to sustainable tourism and visit a Lahu village high above the misty mountains.
See some of Thailand’s most impressive landscapes when you travel through layered rice terraces and venture to Thailand's highest peak in Doi Inthanon National Park.
Spend a full day exploring the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Khao Yai National Park. Hike through the jungle, learn about the abundant flora and fauna, then go in search of the wild elephants who call this park home.
Uncover lesser-known chapters of Thailand’s history from the 1500-year-old Si Thep Historical Park to the role of the region in the WWII.
Tailor your full free day in bustling Bangkok, then finish your trip on the island of Koh Ngai, where snorkelling, island hopping and watching epic sunsets are all on the cards.
Is this trip right for you?
This trip covers a lot of ground. You'll be mostly travelling in a private minivan in the north. Some of the travel days can be long, with plenty of stops to break up the journey and opportunities to enjoy the stunning scenery of northern Thailand along the way. Please check the itinerary details for details about the overnight train from Bangkok to Trang.
Some of the destinations visited on this trip are much-loved by the locals but are yet to be discovered by international visitors, hence why we call them hidden gems. However, it’s unlikely we’ll be able to completely avoid tourist crowds in all destinations.
This trip doesn't spend a lot of time in Chiang Mai. We highly recommend spending extra time in this charming city before the start of your trip. Please speak to your booking agent if you are interested in booking additional nights here.
The trip finishes on Koh Ngai Island. To leave the trip from Koh Ngai, you can take the speedboat to Pak Meng Pier (tickets bookable at your resort), from where you can travel to Trang Airport. It’s recommended you don’t book any onward flights out of Trang earlier than 4 pm on the same day.
