Trip Informations
Immerse yourself in Greenland on a west coast Arctic adventure to Disko Bay and beyond. Marvel at towering icebergs at the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ilulissat Icefjord, meet the locals and experience Inuit culture. From colourful villages to glaciers, fjords and dramatic mountains, this voyage brings together the highlights of this storied land. Even in Greenland’s larger towns, Arctic nature is never far and life moves to the rhythm of the sea, tides and midnight sun. Begin in Kangerlussuaq, visiting Sisimiut, the basalt mountains of Qeqertarsuaq and Uummannaq on the ‘Greenlandic Riviera.’ Continue to the stunning Eqip Sermia Glacier and iconic Ilulissat Icefjord before passing through Itilleq, where traditional hunting and fishing thrive. Along the way, zip by Zodiac to explore remote villages and Arctic nature.
Why you’ll love this trip
Taste Greenlandic delicacies, meet sled dogs and get a feel for the city's Inuit heritage in Sisimiut.
Cruise towards Eqip Sermia Glacier by Zodiac, getting a close look at its immense ice front – keep an ear out for the crack and thunderous roar of ice calving into the sea.
Experience the 'Greenlandic Riviera' in Uummannaq, where colourful houses sit beneath the town’s distinctive heart-shaped mountain and icebergs drift through the surrounding fjord – this spot really makes for the perfect photo!
Witness the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ilulissat Icefjord, then follow trails above iceberg-filled waters to the massive Sermeq Kujalleq.
Hike through the tundra meadows and natural rock sculptures of Qeqertarsuaq, then explore Disko Island’s caves, waterfalls and iceberg-dotted coast by Zodiac.
Is this trip right for you?
The Ocean Victory is an ice-strengthened ship – large, sturdy and suited to the unpredictable Arctic waters. Some people may experience seasickness in occasional rough seas. We have a doctor on board should you need assistance. Over-the-counter seasickness medication is usually an easy fix.
Temperatures in the Arctic can get very cold, but it also can get surprisingly warm when the sun comes out. We recommend dressing in layers when you journey outside. We’ll loan you waterproof boots that are sturdy and warm, plus we’ll provide you with a waterproof jacket that is yours to keep. Please see the 'Essential Trip Information' for a packing list.
Depending on the weather, you’ll be travelling in a Zodiac boat quite regularly to explore the areas and search for wildlife. It can get cold and wet on the Zodiac, so make sure you dress appropriately and keep your camera safe and dry. A fair level of mobility is needed for wet and dry landings from the boat, as well as on steep terrain, snow and other uneven surfaces. Elevators may be closed in rough seas, requiring the use of stairs for meals, presentations and activities.
The weather plays a pivotal part in this adventure and, although there’s an itinerary in place, there are no guarantees that you’ll be able to do everything that is planned. A level of flexibility and openness to embracing the unexpected are important in expedition travel, especially in an area as remote as the Arctic. The experienced expedition team and captain will always have alternative landing sites planned if the first option is no longer available due to weather.
We may be confined to the ship during rough weather, but there are plenty of onboard resources and activities. The ship’s library and educational lectures are ideal ways to stay entertained, while the spa and gym will keep you fresh for when the weather clears.
