Trip Informations
Take on this incredible, nine-day trekking adventure through Georgia’s Caucasus Mountains. Warm up with a hike from Kojori to Tbilisi, then head to the Svaneti region. Trek to Chaaladi Glacier in Mestia, then take on the Transcaucasian Trail to Ushguli along forest paths and cow tracks, over mountain passes and viewpoints, across meadows and streams and through villages, meeting locals along the way. At the end of each day, you can enjoy well-deserved, home-cooked feasts while learning about the Svans people. This is an adventure mixed with rewarding challenges, sweeping mountain views, hospitable local culture and lasting memories.
Why you’ll love this trip
verified
Trek from Mestia to Ushguli – one of the most classic sections of the 3000 km (1864 mi) Transcaucasian Trail. This sustainable trail is still being developed in the Great Caucasus Mountains, across three countries and over 150 communities.
verified
Take in the stunning natural scenery along the way, moving from snow-capped summits to open alpine meadows, through dense forests and to massive glaciers.
verified
See the region’s unique tower houses, dotted across the mountain valleys and visit Ushguli – a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the highest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe.
verified
Spend nights in the quiet mountains in local homestays and guesthouses. Local, home-cooked meals and warm hospitality are a great way to reset after spending all day on your feet!
verified
Trek hassle-free as your luggage is transferred to your destination every day and packed lunch is provided, leaving you with only your day pack and walking poles, so you can focus on soaking up the challenge.
Is this trip right for you?
verified
This is a trekking trip, and you’ll cover up to 17 km (11 mi) with significant elevation gain/loss within each day. The terrain can be rocky and steep, and the trail can be narrow and slippery. You’ll need to be ready to trek 20 percent more than what’s stated in the itinerary details in case of trail changes due to weather and climate.
verified
Sturdy waterproof trekking boots with good grip, and waterproof jackets and pants are essential. Walking poles are highly recommended. You’ll spend most time in the mountains so even summer can get chilly, especially at night, so warm layers are recommended. Please refer to our packing recommendations in the Essential Trip Information for more details.
verified
We use local guesthouses in the villages along the trek. For a couple of nights, the facilities will be shared in the guesthouses.
verified
This trip doesn’t spend much time in Tbilisi or Kutaisi, so we highly recommend spending extra days to explore both cities. You may also check out our other adventures in the region if you have time to extend your travel.
