Trip Informations
Explore South America on this 31-day tour. Take the road less travelled from sky-high La Paz to party-ready Rio de Janeiro, stopping along the way to see the mind-bending Uyani Salt Flat, follow your rhythm in Buenos Aires, ride horses on a Uruguayan estancia and wonder at the incredible power of Iguazu Falls. This overland adventure is big on freedom – your local leader will give you insider info, your group will provide the company of curious, like-minded travellers, and then you decide how you want to spend your days.
Why you’ll love this trip
Take a unique route from La Paz to Rio de Janeiro, stopping at tiny villages and indigenous towns along the way to get an authentic view of South America.
Hit the off-road on a two-day 4WD adventure across the largest salt flats in the world – Uyuni – exploring cactus islands, train cemeteries and mineral lakes teeming with flamingos.
Harness your inner gaucho during a three-day stay at an estancia in Uruguay. Ride horses relax in nature or get involved with activties – it’s up to you.
The mighty Iguazu Falls straddles the border between Argentina and Brazil, and this tour includes a visit to both sides for a complete experience.
Spend a day in Tilcara, one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in Argentina that is surrounded by steep and spectacular gorges and mountains.
Is this trip right for you?
This trip spends time at altitude; you should refer to the Medical & Health Information for this trip to understand the risks.
Making your way across the Salar de Uyuni isn’t exactly luxurious. There will be long travel days spent in 4WDs which will likely have all seats occupied travelling on dusty and bumpy tracks. For the 4WD excursion you may share with people outside your group depending on your group composition. Temperatures can be very cold, especially at night, so bring warm clothes. Meals are simple, toilet facilities are basic, showers can be cold, and the multi- share accommodation is dormitory style. This is all part of the adventure. Without a doubt, this experience will be one of the highlights of your trip.
Please note that our leaders are not able to organise a trip to the ‘Death Road’ cycling route to Coroico for you due to safety concerns. Injuries are common along the road and there have been a number of fatal accidents. Our leaders are also unable to organise tours to the Potosi Mines.
There are some long travel days and two overnight bus journeys on this trip. Although the buses feature  reclining seats, they are not beds. There’s also usually a toilet on board and some of the buses make toilet stops. These trips can be tiresome, but an adventure around South America wouldn’t be complete without a bumpy bus journey.

A great trip to experience the diversity of climate and geography - from the mountainous altitude and stunning scenery of Bolivia to the tropical beaches of Brazil. The people and culture of South America make it a memorable experience.

This was a 31 day trip which was fast paced in first few weeks and slower on the second leg . So much variation and lots of knowledge gained . Recommended !!

This trip was not high on my to do list and therefore I went into it with a few expectations. It turned out to be fantastic and one of the best best ever! And I’ve taken a lot of Intrepid trips!

this trip is deftly not for everyone there are many small and bigger things that the intrepid can easily do to make this trip much more convertible couple of things to memo no bed sheet on the bed, put 7 adults in a jeep for the whole day travel, quality and food safety for the meals that are include in the trip is not excepted lot of this places not have electricity and meat etc are outside the fridge for many hrs before repaired. there are many long public bus rides on this trip with two overnight ones and no stops. There are many wonderful cities and beautiful countries to explore on this trip but keep in mind it is very different
