Trip Informations
Why you’ll love this trip
Compare and contrast the various traditions, cuisines and of course, mulled wine, in a variety of Christmas markets across central Europe.
Experience Munich's Christmas markets – probably the most famous of them all. Bavarian food, ale and music make this an unforgettable Christmas experience.
Explore Salzburg’s markets and travel high above the rooftops of the Baroque historical district to the fully preserved castle, the Hohensalzburg Fortress.
Pick up any last-minute gifts at Vienna's Christmas markets. Austria's capital provides a spectacular seasonal shopping affair, with tonnes of hand-crafted toys, candles and paintings on offer.
Take a walk through the streets of jolly Budapest to find every street, tree and market lit up in lights.
Is this trip right for you?
While the Christmas markets we visit are all beautiful, they can get very busy, so please be prepared for crowds. We'll also spend a considerable amount of time outdoors, and as it is winter it would be advisable you bring warm clothing and are adequately prepared for the weather.
The primary means of transportation on this trip is by train. Train travel is a fast way to traverse long distances, allowing you to avoid traffic jams and arrive right into the city centre. Trains are comfortable and often decked out with air-conditioning, toilets, a snack bar (or vending machine) and power points. Please note that you'll have to carry your own luggage on and off the train, so make sure it doesn’t exceed our weight and size recommendations. You can find this information in the 'Packing' section of the Essential Trip Information.
Hotels in Europe often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together.
On this trip you must pack as lightly as possible because you will be expected to carry your own bag and although you won't be required to walk long distances with your luggage (max 30 minutes), we strongly recommend keeping the weight under 15kg / 33lb. Most travellers carry their luggage in a backpack, although an overnight bag with a shoulder strap would suffice if you travel lightly. Smaller bags or backpacks with wheels are convenient although we recommend your bag has carry straps to accommodate the cobbled streets, uneven surfaces, stairs and steps you are likely to encounter while carrying your luggage. You'll also need a day pack/bag to carry water and a camera etc for day trips.

An excellent Christmas Market tour from Munich to Budapest! The tour leader was knowledgeable, attentive, and ensured a perfect balance of guided activities and free time. Well-paced train travel, enriching historical and cultural insights, comfortable accommodations, and helpful pre-trip information made this an immersive and highly enjoyable European experience.

This trip was very nice and provided a wonderful, but quick, holiday getaway. I enjoyed the balance of touring and having free days in the cities as well. The hotels were all nice by Central European standards. They were all fairly close to central, but next to quick transport to get you there. You see some markets as a group, but have a lot of time to go to the ones you want. They do get crowded, so be prepared. Dress in layers! It gets cold!

A great first trip booked with Intrepid. European Christmas Markets with a good mix of scenery thrown in as well. Our guide Balasz, went out of his way to make sure everyone was accommodated with what they wanted to do and see and nothing appeared to be too much trouble. He was very considerate of everyone in the group and different individual's circumstances and overall I think everybody enjoyed themselves.

An excellent trip with plenty of free time to explore and take in the local sights. Highly recommend the day trip to Hallstatt and suggest adding an extra day at the end of your journey to make the most of the last day in Budapest.

Our Christmas Market trip in December was fabulous! Only disappointment was that we didn’t have snow until the last night of our trip. Our tour leader, Robert, was excellent and we spent a week with a great group of people. A very worthwhile trip, would highly recommend it.

Martin was an exceptional tour guide who exceeded all our expectations. He ensured that every need was met and made the experience unforgettable. Traveling with him felt like being with a close friend—his sense of humor added so much joy, yet he remained professional throughout. I truly hope to cross paths with him again in the future. Highly recommended!

If you are a fan of Christmas then this is the trip for you. Traditional German Christmas markets are best experienced in Germany with local crafts, food and drinks. Plenty of time to explore the romance of other European cities themselves and see the lights of the markets each evening. Plenty of walking and chilling days will require a glass of Gluhwien to warm you through. Be prepared to travel as this trip will show you the stars.
