Trip Informations
Ancient history, golden sands and crowded souqs – Egypt is the ultimate destination for any adventurous traveller. This nine-day trip is the perfect mix of blockbuster wonders and intimate moments, with loads of planned activities and plenty of time to wander at your own pace. Your local leader will take you to bucket list icons like the Pyramids of Giza (one of the Seven Wonders of the World) in Cairo and the Valley of the Kings in Luxor, then guide you off the beaten path to eat koshari in a local downtown joint, or into a bazaar to meet a perfume merchant. Kayak along the Nile, spend a night on a traditional felucca under starry skies and drink your body weight in mint tea. The best part? You’ll do it all with like-minded travellers your own age.
Why you’ll love this trip
Spend a night cruising the Nile in a traditional felucca boat (a bit like a floating living room) stopping at colourful villages and temples by day and stargazing by night.
Witness some epic sights in Cairo, like the mysterious Sphinx and one of the Seven Wonders of the World – the Great Pyramids of Giza. Maybe even learn how to spell your name in hieroglyphics!
Kayak along the Nile, paddling through ancient landscapes and getting a glimpse into local life along the shores.
Discover the Valley of the Kings with a tour through three burial sites of ancient Pharaohs and the option to check out the fascinating lost tomb of Tutankhamun.
Squeeze between stalls at an Aswan bazaar and discover the open-air museum of Luxor with loads of free time to see the sights at your own pace and a local leader with all the hot tips.
Is this trip right for you?
It gets pretty warm in July and August in Egypt. The good news is, it's mostly dry heat, so easier to handle than humidity. Egypt nights can be chillier than expected, especially from December to February, so it’s important to pack clothes that can be layered.
The terrain at some historic sites can be rocky and steep. Solid walking shoes are essential, plus anything to shade you from those rays – a hat, sunscreen and long sleeves. If you don't feel up to it on a hot day, you can decide to not take part, or wander at your own pace.
This trip includes the adventure of overnight train travel, one of the most unique ways to wake up in a new and strange place. You’ll get a small bed and air conditioning in a shared room, but the train might not be as clean as you’re used to.
This trip is a great way to see a lot in a short period of time and it can be part of a longer itinerary if you have more time to explore. You might like to check out Real Egypt & Jordan.

A truly wonderful experience. Our guide, Ahmed, was amazing - he was approachable, honest, and incredibly knowledgable. The itinerary was packed full of adventure - the felucca and hot air balloon being two trip highlights - and every day delivered a new memory that I will cherish for a lifetime. Although travelling to the Middle East with celiac is difficult for me, Ahmed communicated with restaurants, advised on what food to eat and which foods to avoid, and put our safety first.

An impressively packed itinerary covering the essentials (and more!) of Egypt. Hugely enjoyable and memorable experiences, made even better by a great group of people (not guaranteed I know!) and Ahmed, a superb guide. Plenty of early starts, but didn't mind as it meant we saw/did so much. Plus sufficient free time to do extras if wanted.

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip. I came to Egypt with zero expectations and have left with a wealth of knowledge. Our trip had enough free time to get out and explore or rest from the day before.

Great trip with a well-planned itinerary and a perfect mix of highlights and local experiences. We always felt safe and well guided. Our guide Ahmet did an excellent job navigating busy Egypt—knowledgeable, calm, and highly organized. Highly recommended!

This trip in Egypt gives you deep insight into the cultural background of the country—both into the time of the Pharaohs and into how people live today. Everything was very well organized and brought us a great deal of joy. Our guide, Ahmed Elsanary in particular, had an incredibly positive impact on all of us. It was also wonderful to travel with a group of people from different countries. This trip is highly recommended if Egypt is your chosen destination.

The trip follows its name: essential Egypt. You hit the main locations and, at least for our group, with a kind guide (shout out to Adham). But be aware that Intrepid prices for optional activities don't include transportation and guide fees - and those pieces aren't always optional (aka you can't get to some places on your own/easily). Hopefully they become more transparent because overall, this trip is very worth it!

Mohsen was a brilliant guide. Time management was imprecisely. Especially at Phillae temple. Absolute gentleman.

Doing the Essential Egypt trip with Intrepid was the most amazing experience. From our awesome tour guide to the diversity of activities we did, either as included or optional activities, I am so grateful for all of it. The overnight felucca boat ride on the Nile was one of my favorite parts about the trip, and I loved getting to talk with the boat drivers (and sing Bob Marley with them). I loved this trip so much, and hope to do another one soon!

Fantastic trip, especially the felucca boat on the Nile and the visit to the pyramids. Luxor was also a highlight!
