Trip Informations
Why you’ll love this trip
Spend the night in a Maasai village in the remote Loita Hills region – be welcomed with traditional warrior song and dance, learn about life from community elders and maybe even learn to throw a spear.
Search for wildebeest, lions and leopards on a game drive in Maasai Mara National Reserve, then listen to the African wilderness come alive after sunset at your bush camp.
Cross the Serengeti in a purpose-built truck for one of those classic East African experiences – think vast plains spotted with thorn trees and huge herds of zebras and gazelles.
Explore the gigantic Ngorongoro Crater – the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and a home for around 30,000 large mammals. Look out for elephants and hippos as you drive along the crater floor.
Stop in places like Karatu and Musoma for a chance to chat with locals, swap stories and learn about their culture.
Is this trip right for you?
In Loita Hills, you'll be staying in a secure bush camp with basic facilities, hot bucket showers are available in the morning. Wi-fi is not available and only minimal upgrades are on offer at tonight’s bush camp.
Camping in the Serengeti means, well, camping in the Serengeti. No barriers between you and mother nature means there's no fence between you and the animals. We take safety seriously and your leader will brief you in detail on how to set up camp so as to deter animals from entering the camp.
This is an overland trip. That means you’ll be travelling with a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities, setting up your own tent, occasionally roughing it in the bush with no facilities, waking up before sunrise and getting the best possible views of the ‘Big Five’. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The drive days can be long, but it’s as much about the journey as the destination, and half the fun is the camaraderie. This trip is a great way to see a lot in a short period of time and it can be part of a longer itinerary if you have more time to explore. You might like to check out Real East Africa & Zanzibar.

Highlights: our incredible leader, chef and driver who made us feel so comfortable and happy the whole trip. As the only vegetarian I was catered for the whole time with amazing food. We saw the big 5 and part of the wildebeest migration which was so special. Lowlights: long travel days in the truck and very early (4am) mornings, sand fly infestation at Lake Victoria, ‘optional activity’at Mto Wa Bu is not actually optional AMAZING trip, Be prepared for lions and hyenas around your tent in the Serengeti!!

Our guide, Joseph, was absolutely incredible. If he ever comes to visit NZ, I hope he gets in touch because he is always welcome to stay with us. Being Masai himself, he was very knowledgeable and worked so hard to get us to see the big 5 (which we managed to get checked off). A great trip - thanks to the people!

This trip was incredible! Our leader Patrick Kai was knowledgeable & caring; our driver Stephen was safe & even had to play mechanic when we blew a tire to get us back on the road swiftly; and our chef Elvis made the most delicious, nourishing meals. We also got to see the Big 5! The trip of a lifetime :)

The trip was great! It was lead by a local tour guide knowing lots about culture, wild animals, nature and the local tribes. A local chef made sure we were fed by amazing fresh African food and our driver was making sure we arrived safely, handling problems with excellency. The whole group, crew, animals, nature and exprtiences were just great! Make sure however to order or bring your sleeping bag.
