Trip Informations
Go beyond Cairo’s headline sites on a 13-day journey through Egypt’s cities, deserts and ancient sites. Stand before the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, then uncover the lesser-known pyramids of Saqqara and Dahshur. Travel north to Mediterranean Alexandria for the Roman catacombs, head deep into the Western Desert to explore the remote Siwa Oasis and the Oracle of Amun, and go off-roading in the Great Sand Sea. Meet local female artisans, share a home-cooked Egyptian meal and sail overnight on a traditional felucca from Aswan. Finish among Luxor’s temples, royal tombs and towering monuments.
Why you’ll love this trip
Explore remote Siwa – wander ancient Shali Town and Castle, visit the Temple of the Oracle of Amun, then unwind at Cleopatra’s Bath.
Go off-roading in the Great Sand Sea of the Western Desert. Stop at Bir Wahed, a water spring located in the middle of the sand dunes, bathe in mineral water, then sip tea at sunset.
Stand before the Great Pyramids of Giza – one of the Seven Wonders of the World – and see the mighty Sphinx, then visit Saqqara’s Step Pyramid and Dahshur’s Bent and Red pyramids – among Egypt’s oldest, largest and best preserved.
Sail overnight on a traditional felucca from Aswan, after visiting Philae and its Temple of Isis. Then, explore Luxor’s Karnak Temple, the Valley of the Kings and Colossi of Memnon.
Descend into Alexandria’s Kom el Shoqafa Catacombs – a maze of burial chambers. Then, visit the Roman Amphitheatre and trace the city’s Greco-Roman past.
Is this trip right for you?
Travelling on a felucca (traditional wooden boat) is awesome, but it's not for everyone. You will be sharing a sleeping area with your fellow group members for the night and a shared bathroom facility. You'll sleep outside under the stars on a simple mattress, with some bedding provided. If you do feel the cold, you should consider bringing a sleeping bag.
The walkways around many Egyptian ruins can be uneven, dusty and rocky, so be sure to bring comfortable walking shoes. At large sites such as Valley of the Kings, you can also expect to be walking in the elements for most of the day, so adequate sun protection is essential.
Some hotels in Egypt may not have lifts. You may need to climb stairs with your luggage to reach your hotel room for the night.
Temperatures in the Egypt can be extreme, ranging from very hot to very cold, depending on the season – it can even snow in some places! Layers will come in handy for sun protection as well as warmth.
Overnight train journeys are a fast way to cross long distances, better for the environment and a great travel experience. You will share two-berth air-conditioned cabins, with all bedding provided and western style toilets on board.
