Trip Informations
From the heights of the Andes to the depths of the Amazon Jungle, this nine-day trip will take you through diverse Ecuador. Walk through the Amazon Jungle with an Indigenous guide leading the way, hike in Cotopaxi National Park – home to one of the world’s largest active volcanos – and canoe to your river-side eco-lodge accommodation on the edge of the rainforest. Get a glimpse into everyday life during a homestay with a local family, where you’ll connect with them and participate in a Pachamanca food ceremony, perhaps also brushing up on your Espanol. There’s so much to see, do and learn in this South American paradise and you’ll take it all on with a local leader and likeminded travellers.
Why you’ll love this trip
Stay on the edge of the Amazon Rainforest in eco lodge-style accommodation on the banks of the Arajuno River and enjoy a special evening walk through the jungle under the night sky.
Walk in the rainforest with an Indigenous guide by your side to lead the way, point out local birds and teach you about the plant life that thrives here.
Hike to Pailon del Diablo – an 80-m-high waterfall so fierce that you’ll need to carry a poncho to keep dry from its wrath!
Marvel at the snow-capped Cotopaxi volcano – one of the largest and highest active volcanos in the world – while hiking through Cotopaxi National Park.
Learn from a local Indigenous community during your homestay in the La Calera Community. Take part in the Pachamanca food ceremony, which has been a part of South American culture for centuries.
Is this trip right for you?
This is trip spends time at altitude; you should refer to the Medical & Health Information for this trip to understand the risks.
Temperatures in the Amazon can fluctuate from daytime humidity to night-time chill. Insects, especially mosquitoes, are common. We recommend tropical-strength insect repellent and light cotton clothing that covers your arms and legs, with warmer layers for the evening.
This trip includes jungle hikes, which can be strenuous due to the humidity. A decent level of fitness is required to feel comfortable when exploring the jungle.
While accommodation in the Amazon is clean, comfortable and ideally located, it can seem basic. Please remember that this is a very remote part of the world.

Etiel was a fantastic guide! He was incredibly knowledgeable about not only the wildlife, foliage, history and geography, but also the people and their social struggles and triumphs. He was very accommodating to everyone’s individual interests and needs, whether they be medical necessities or helping us accomplish unique activities, he was on top of it all. Thank you, Etiel!

The Ecuador Highlands tour was fantastic. Vanessa, our tour guide, was a wealth of information and she was truly committed to our happiness on the tour. There were unique inclusions that truly showcased what Ecuador is all about. Highly recommend :)

We tagged the Highlands trip on to the Best of Galapagos and it was well worthwhile, with a great variety of places and activities. Our guide, Vanessa, was excellent and did her utmost to ensure we had a memorable experience.

Our Ecuador trip exceeded every expectation — warm people, breathtaking landscapes from the Amazon to the Andes, and unforgettable food. Our tour director Johanna went above and beyond, surprising us with local fruit tastings, Cayambe biscuits on the equator line, and a stunning panoramic farewell dinner. Truly incredible.

Highly recommend this trip! Don't be fooled by all the "free" time in the itinerary--it's packed with many adventures that aren't listed, all at a manageable pace. Jo was a phenomenal and enthusiastic guide! Treat your clothes with permethrin for the Amazon, do NOT bring anything higher than a $20 bill (though you'll still struggle to break that), and brush up on your Spanish for the homestay because you'll be in small groups without your guide to translate. A wonderful and adventurous trip that showcased the variety of Ecuador!

Great way to see Ecuador you really get a cover of the dynamic changing landscape and culture, I specifically chose this trip for more for the highland aspect but I loved how the amazon was included as well! Honestly I couldnt pick a favourite place or activity on this trip it was all so unique and diverse great for anyone! It covers so much, believe that! Even being one of the youngest in my group I found this trip to be a good blend of social and independent group enviornment, I didnt feel out of place at all. So for anyone in their early twenties dont be afraid to reach out and ask intripied if you have any questions!

This is an excellent trip and the group leader Johanna was amazing. The Amazon basin at Tena and Banos were my highlights, but I enjoyed everything. We had a lovely group. Don't miss the hot springs at Banos. There are many negative reviews online, but it was great to experience the springs with the locals. Have a massage if you can in Banos - again brilliant. I really enjoyed the food in Ecuador, especially the huge variety of fruits. The journey times are longer than stated in the trip notes, but I have mentioned this so they may be updated.
