Trip Informations
From the heights of the Andes to the depths of the Amazon Jungle, this nine-day trip will take you through diverse Ecuador. Walk through the Amazon Jungle with an Indigenous guide leading the way, hike in Cotopaxi National Park – home to one of the world’s largest active volcanos – and canoe to your river-side eco-lodge accommodation on the edge of the rainforest. Get a glimpse into everyday life during a homestay with a local family, where you’ll connect with them and participate in a Pachamanca food ceremony, perhaps also brushing up on your Espanol. There’s so much to see, do and learn in this South American paradise and you’ll take it all on with a local leader and likeminded travellers.
Why you’ll love this trip
Stay on the edge of the Amazon Rainforest in eco lodge-style accommodation on the banks of the Arajuno River and enjoy a special evening walk through the jungle under the night sky.
Walk in the rainforest with an Indigenous guide by your side to lead the way, point out local birds and teach you about the plant life that thrives here.
Hike to Pailon del Diablo – an 80-m-high waterfall so fierce that you’ll need to carry a poncho to keep dry from its wrath!
Marvel at the snow-capped Cotopaxi volcano – one of the largest and highest active volcanos in the world – while hiking through Cotopaxi National Park.
Learn from a local Indigenous community during your homestay in the La Calera Community. Take part in the Pachamanca food ceremony, which has been a part of South American culture for centuries.
Is this trip right for you?
This is trip spends time at altitude; you should refer to the Medical & Health Information for this trip to understand the risks.
Temperatures in the Amazon can fluctuate from daytime humidity to night-time chill. Insects, especially mosquitoes, are common. We recommend tropical-strength insect repellent and light cotton clothing that covers your arms and legs, with warmer layers for the evening.
This trip includes jungle hikes, which can be strenuous due to the humidity. A decent level of fitness is required to feel comfortable when exploring the jungle.
While accommodation in the Amazon is clean, comfortable and ideally located, it can seem basic. Please remember that this is a very remote part of the world.

This was a wonderful trip as an add on to the Galapagos boat trip. I feel we saw a lot of Ecuador; the rainforest and volcanoes are amazing and very beautiful; stunning scenery. Our guide Daniela was amazing, so knowledgeable about Equador and its culture, flora and fauna. A highly recommended trip not to be missed!

The itinerary on this trip was perfect. I was able to see more of Ecuador than I’d ever be able to do by myself.

This was our first trip with Intrepid and I would recommend them highly. The planning, communication and delivery is first class and their values of environmental responsibility is well demonstrated by their team.

Book it. Don’t hesitate. My intro to Ecuador and South America in general was enjoyable. This itinerary showcases the different aspects of life in Ecuador from the rainforest, to the mountains and interacting with the Kichwa and being involved in their way of life.

Ecuador is a relatively small country but offers great diversity, even when not including the Galápagos. This tour showcases this diversity in a relatively short time. In just nine days we got to experience the big city (Quito), the Amazon, a mountain resort (Baños), and many volcanoes, sometimes even not obscured by clouds. Add to that an enthusiastic tourleader and an engaging group with diversity in nationality and age, and one has the ingredients of an unforgettable experience.

Equador was an incredible experience. We had booked this trip as a start to our holiday to the Galapagos but never expected it to be so incredible. Going into the Amazon on canoes, meeting locals and staying with them was so lovely, not at all scaring once you broke the ice, even though we spoke hardly any spanish ( can order a coffee and a beer🤣). Johanna was the best guide ever and made the trip for us!!! 🥰 Do this trip and you will be in for a great trip. 10/10!!!

The Ecuador Highlands tour was just brilliant, Johanna, our guide, was fabulous. The itinerary and organisation was amazing and great that everything was organised for you. The 2 nights in the Amazon were fabulous (note no electricity in your lodge) but not too much wildlife (lots of Monkeys and bugs!). A brilliant trip with great people.

Ecuador is a beautiful country and is well worth visiting - it is so much more than the Galapagos. Johanna was a fabulous guide - warm, funny, kind, knowledgeable, very organised, yet relaxed and flexible around the group's needs. Highly recommended!

I really enjoyed this tour from start to finish. The accommodations were excellent and centrally located. The homestay was an interesting experience and provided a unique opportunity to be culturally immersed. The meals were great and the activities exciting. I highly recommend this tour of you are looking for a mix of culture and adventure.
