Trip Informations
Why you’ll love this trip
Journey through the scenic Rila Mountains in Bulgaria, where you'll visit the Rila Monastery. Meet local monks at you wander through this UNESCO World Heritage site and largest and holiest of Bulgaria's orthodox monasteries.
Indulge in local Bulgarian cheese and wines with a local chef in Veliko Tarnovo, at their family-owned spot in the Old Town.
Take a trip on the last operational narrow-gauge line in Bulgaria, from Bansko to Plovdiv. Grab a window seat if you can, the scenery is worth it!
Breathe the crisp mountain air on a short hike in the Pirin Mountains in Bulgaria. Stop at the small blue lake surrounded by towering peaks – you might even be able to see the range’s highest peak, Mt Vihren.
Visit Kazanlak Valley, also known as the Valley of Roses. Known for growing the Damascena rose, learn how the rose oil is distilled and created into a perfume during your visit to a family rose distillery in Kazanlak Valley.
Is this trip right for you?
Summer temperatures can be extreme in many of the regions visited (over 40°C), which can be uncomfortable. It’s important to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat and drink plenty of water. Please carefully consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability for that season.
Hotels in Europe often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together/apart.
As you will have the opportunity to visit several orthodox churches on this trip, please ensure you cover your legs, shoulders and chest and show the appropriate respect. It's a good idea to bring a light scarf to cover your skin as needed.
On this trip, you must pack as lightly as possible because you will be expected to carry your own bag and although you won't be required to walk long distances with your luggage (max 30 minutes), we strongly recommend keeping the weight under 15 kg. Most travellers carry their luggage in a backpack, although an overnight bag with a shoulder strap would suffice. We recommend your bag has carry straps to accommodate the cobbled streets, uneven surfaces, stairs and steps.
If you have more time to explore the region, check out trips 'Eastern Europe Explorer' (trip code WMSEC) and 'Journey through Central Europe & Romania' (trip code AMSCC). Most departure dates are designed to create these perfect combination trips.

A wonderful trip through Bulgaria. I really enjoyed the places we visited, and the mix of organised and free time. The leadership provided by our Tour Leader Roumi was exemplary. She kept us well informed of plans and made the whole trip fun.

Great trip, Mihail was a very caring & knowledgeable leader and was always there for us. However I felt the trio was all too rushed and would have liked it to have included more time in some destinations to do it own thing, and definitely more time in Romania.

This trip was amazing! If you get Vali as your tour guide, you are definitely in good hands and know that he will take care of you. He’s approachable, kind and very knowledgeable. He’s always willing to give his suggestions or recommendations as well as far as restaurants to try or sites to see. Bulgaria is absolutely stunning and exceeded my expectations.

This tour gives a broad exposure to Bulgaria. The local tour guides are very knowledgeable. We learned so much about the history. The opportunity to explore cities on our own let us focus on our interests

Thank you to Intrepid for introducing us to Romania and Bulgaria. Well organized tour that enabled us to visit places we probably wouldn’t have been able to access on our own. Both our your leaders (Mihail and Georgi) were informative, engaging and accommodating. Expertly managed the hiccups along the way. Really appreciated that Georgi facilitated us doing a longer hike at Bansko as it was a highlight. If anything we’d like to see more opportunities like this. There is so much wonderful hiking to be done in Romania it appears.

This tour is a quick visit to key cities and attractions in countries which until recently had been part of the Eastern Bloc. You'll get an appreciation of how they've emerged into the more modern European standard whilst retaining valuable parts of their heritage.

If you enjoy experiencing a country’s nature and culture, you’ll have a great time on this trip. The itinerary was slick, well paced and covered such beautiful and interesting sites in Bulgaria. Highlights included a hike in the Pirin Mountains and our visit to Plovdiv. Our tour leader, Mihail, was a legend! Just make sure you bring lots of snacks for the long journeys!

Great short trip through Bulgaria. Mihail was a fantastic trip leader who showed us much of his home country and what it has to offer. Enjoy a short hike, beautiful train rides and quaint smaller cities.
