Is this trip right for you?
Summer temperatures can be extreme in many of the regions visited (over 40°C), which can be uncomfortable. It’s important to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat and drink plenty of water. Please carefully consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.
Hotels in Europe often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together. This trip is a great opportunity to get to know other travellers, so embrace it while you can. Please also note that some accommodation used on this trip offer shared bathrooms rather than en-suite facilities.
This trip involves some travel by public bus or train, including a few long journeys of up to seven hours. Although this can be a bit tiresome, it's a great way to meet locals and relax while enjoying the passing scenery.
As you will have the opportunity to visit several orthodox churches on this trip, please ensure you cover your legs, shoulders and chest and show the appropriate respect. It's a good idea to bring a light scarf to cover your skin as needed.
If you have more time to explore the region you can extend your trip by starting your travels in Vienna to see the best of Central Europe before heading to Romania and then Bulgaria. Check out our trip 'Journey through Central Europe & Romania' (trip code AMSCC). Most departure dates are designed to create these perfect combination trips.
On this trip you must pack as lightly as possible because you will be expected to carry your own bag and although you won't be required to walk long distances with your luggage (max 30 minutes), we strongly recommend keeping the weight under 15kg / 33lb. Most travellers carry their luggage in a backpack, although an overnight bag with a shoulder strap would suffice if you travel lightly. Smaller bags or backpacks with wheels are convenient although we recommend your bag has carry straps to accommodate the cobbled streets, uneven surfaces, stairs and steps you are likely to encounter while carrying your luggage. You'll also need a day pack/bag to carry water and a camera etc for day trips.

I was surprised and delighted by this Intrepid adventure. Both Andi and Roumi were wonderful tour leaders and made the trip run smoothly and efficiently, I really appreciated their knowledge and suggestions for our free time. All included activities and meals were spot on.

This was an excellent tour full of surprises. Amazing history, beautiful countryside and buildings. Food and local drinks are delicious and the people so friendly. The pace of this tour and inclusions exceeded my expectations. The home stay at Ramona’s was a highlight as was the village stay at Viscri. Visit to Rila Monastery & Bulgaria Donuts with fig leave Jan and buffalo yogurt - delicious. Hiking in Pirin Mountains. A big thank you to our awesome tour leaders Andi and Roumi. Tips - get Mobile data as really helps in your free time to find suggested options to visit. Credit cards accepted widely but still need local currencies.

Dont be afraid to explore this little known part of the world. Extremely safe and friendly people. Very good value. Intrepid have excellent leaders who take the stress out of trying to do it yourself. You could not equal this on your own. So much history here.

This was our first experience using Intrepid in Europe. We undertook three journeys in Central and Eastern Europe. I would certainly consider taking additional trips in Europe with Intrepid.

Fascinating places and people, brought history so alive, very attuned to how much background to give us, and how a sense of humour brings everything more to life. I would seriously consider going on any Intrepid tour where Vali was the leader. Depends a lot on the Tour Leader and we had the best of the best.

I loved getting to know a bit of Romania and Bulgaria on this trip. I knew a little about Romanian history and folklore, but Bulgaria was a mystery to me. They are both beautiful countries! Our tour leader Georgi was great. He was kind and patient when some people in the first half of my tour got sick. Also, when he found out that some of us in the group like to hike, he took us out on a couple of small hikes not included in the itinerary that allowed us to see a bit more of the countryside and some beautiful views, which I was grateful for. Intrepid is always on point with their selection of tour leaders! Be prepared for lots of train rides, public bus rides, and carrying your luggage to and from bus stations and train stations (my advice-pack light!).

This was our first trip with Intrepid and my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We had 2 fabulous guides who were considerate, knowledgeable and fun to be around. They both catered to our needs and went above and beyond to make sure our trip was the best it could be.
