Trip Informations
Join a 15-day adventure that combines the highlights of the Balkans and the less-travelled destinations of North Macedonia and Albania, creating the perfect balance between must-see spots and off-the-beaten-track experiences. Hang out in Dubrovnik's Old Town, cruise around Lake Ohrid, go on hikes in Pelister National Park and the foothills of Mt Olympus and sample regional delicacies in Athens. With a curated selection of inclusions, plenty of free time to tailor your adventure and an expert local leader to give you all the best recommendations, this slice of Europe is all yours to explore.
Why you’ll love this trip
Admire the UNESCO World Heritage-listed architecture of Dubrovnik and Montenegro’s Kotor, then opt to take a cruise on the Kotor Fjord – the longest fjord south of Scandinavia!
Lose yourself in Tirana, Albania's colourful capital, and partake in the locals' favourite pastime – drinking coffee and people-watching.
Sail across Lake Ohrid – one of Europe's oldest lakes. Plus, go on a guided walking tour of Ohrid, a UNESCO World Heritage site dotted with prehistoric dwellings and the ruins of an early Christian church.
Hike the slopes of Mt Olympus, the mythological home of the Olympians (the 12 main Greek gods), maybe going for a dip in a waterfall and visiting the St Dionysios Monastery along the way.
Taste authentic regional dishes, including a lunch with a local family in the city of Bitola in North Macedonia. Your local leader will be ready with recommendations for the best restaurants to try at each location.
Is this trip right for you?
Please keep your luggage as small and light as possible. You'll be travelling on public transport where storage space is limited. You'll need to be able to lift your luggage into storage racks, walk across cobblestone streets with it and carry it up and down stairs.
The Balkan peninsula is very hilly and mountainous, so lots of steps are a feature of the landscape. Also, stone streets become very slippery when wet. Some people may find the Balkans’ topography very demanding.
Summer temperatures can be extreme in many of the regions visited (over 40°C), which can be uncomfortable, especially as many of the transport options and accommodations on this trip will not have air-conditioning. It’s important to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat and drink plenty of water. Please carefully consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.
Hotels in Europe often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together. Please also note that in some cases, bathroom facilities will be shared.
If you have more time to explore the region, you may want to check out our trip ‘Dubrovnik to Santorini’. This trip continues on to explore the Cyclades Islands, ending in Santorini.
