Why you’ll love this trip
Tick off one of the Seven Wonders of the World – the Taj Mahal – during your stay in Agra. An impressive example of Mughal architecture, its carved-marble design is as stunning up close as it is far away.
Enjoy a selection of central Indian staples during an at-home cooking demonstration in Orchha for a tasty and enriching look into authentic Indian family life.
Observe the spiritual moments of pilgrims praying and bathing along the ghats of the sacred Ganges River during an unforgettable sunrise cruise in Varanasi – one of India's holiest cities.
Wake to the calls of the jungle on an overnight lodge stay in Chitwan National Park, then embark on a safari in search of rhino, deer, monkeys and a wide array of birdlife.
Spend a memorable night at Amaltari Madhyavarti Homestay, which provides sustainable incomes and encourages local communities to conserve the wilderness and wildlife around them.
Is this trip right for you?
This trip involves travel on public transport, covering long distances and consequently some long days of travel. Long-distance and overnight trains can often be delayed and occasionally cancelled due to heavy fog between December and February. Some patience will go a long way towards your enjoyment here. Sit back, relax and watch the scenery go by – a book or podcast doesn’t go astray.
We do our best to estimate travel times, but these can often change. That's just how it is in these parts and as a result, there's not as much free or independent time as on some other trips.
Nepal and north India can get surprisingly cold in winter, please be prepared and pack accordingly. Speaking of the weather, it also has the potential to be very hot, depending on the season. Please make sure you check seasonal weather guides and pick a travel time that suits your comfort level.
We've sourced our accommodation carefully and picked the best possible hotels in line with the Tuuur style of travel. Service and accommodation in India may be different from Western standards.
Itinerary
Catch a glimpse into the spirit of everyday life in India and Nepal
From capital to capital, this 15-day adventure through India will take you from the energetic hub of Delhi to the spiritual centre of Kathmandu. Start your journey with the big-ticket sites of the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Old Delhi, then slow down as you move through rural India for a starry night on the bank of the River Ganges. Visit the birthplace of Buddha, enjoy the hospitality of a Thar community homestay, look for the rare Indian rhino at Chitwan National Park and learn recipes from a family in Orchhra – this trip is a true look at life in northern South Asia.

AMAZING! I had so many experiences which would never have been possible without our group leader. Visiting locals homes, eating with them and getting an insight into daily life was fascinating. The rhinos were also fantastic at Chitwan!

Our leader, Chandrajeet, was absolutely fantastic. My biggest worry for travelling to India and Nepal was safety and Chandra put me at ease, answered any questions/concerns I had and I felt super safe everywhere we went. The entire trip was brilliant so if you're thinking about it - DO IT! 8 would recommend this trip for October time as I traveled in September and between rain, excessive heat, landslides etc some activities were cancelled or not available... however September did mean less tourists and a very authentic trip. Would also recommend the plane to Mount Everest as an add on but wouldn't recommend the nighttime Tuk Tuk trip in Kathmandu. You already see plenty of temples on this trip so there's no need for this extra add on. Overall, this trip is a brilliant insight into two incredible countries. Cant wait for my next Intrepid trip!

India and Nepal (less so) was a challenge for this comfortable Australian! But this trip was made easier with the level of organisation, flexibility and care. Our tour leaders made everything flow. I was able to go deeper rather than wider into these rich cultures. Love the ethical foundation of Intrepid.

Intrepid Travel’s Delhi to Kathmandu trip was truly spectacular. As a first time visitor to both countries, the trip provided the full cultural experience I was hoping for. As a solo female traveller I felt in really great hands with our Intrepid guide Maddy, and his strong knowledge absolutley inriched the visit. My group was wonderful and the travel style was comfortable. The activities were a great mix and we’ll planned. Logistics weee seamless. Meeting all of the local intrepid guides and learning about their lives was also a highlight to me. A Trip of a lifetime - Thank you Maddy & Intrepid!

If you’re interested in religion (particularly Hinduism), this is for you. If you like history, there’s hardly any on this trip- just a lot (around 10) temple visits and religious mythology. The safari in Chitwan was amazing, but note that if you go in monsoon season you can’t do the Ganges sail and spend a lot of time in varanasi (which doesn’t have much to do there).
