Trip Informations
Explore the rolling hills and olive groves of Tuscany and Chianti on this eight-day cycling adventure from Florence to Pisa. Cycle through small, medieval villages backdropped by mountain views in Chianti and the Crete Senesi region, then ride the pulsing streets of Pisa to the famed lopsided tower. Trace the ancient Via Lauretana, ride along part of an ancient pilgrimage route on Via Francigena and wind through the white roads and clay dunes of the Strade Bianche. With stops in stunning Siena, UNESCO World Heritage-listed San Gimignano and Lucca, you’ll have ample time for bowls of pasta and glasses of Chianti to wind down after rewarding days on the saddle.
Why you’ll love this trip
Ride the Strade Bianche, Tuscany’s famous white gravel roads that are the namesake of the annual cycling race. On the way, pass through the famous white clay dunes known as ‘biancane’.
Cycle in the footsteps of pilgrims along the historic Via Francigena – part of the ancient route from Canterbury to Rome – taking in vistas of vineyards and oak forests along the way.
See the contrasting landscapes of the famous Chianti wine region and the broader Tuscan countryside from your unique vantage point on two wheels. Plus, do some exploring on foot – weave through Florence’s bustling streets and wander the quiet cobblestone lanes of San Gimignano by night.
Spend two nights in stunning Siena – the medieval hilltop town with a historic rivalry with Florence – and venture into the striking landscapes of the Crete Senesi, full of shifting colours and dramatic hills.
Follow the Serchio River by bike from Lucca to the world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. Snap a classic photo in front of the tower or settle in at the best local cafe for some people-watching.
Is this trip right for you?
To complete this trip, it’s important that you’re both confident and competent in riding a bicycle.
While the cycling distances on this trip are relatively short, the stunning terrain of northern Tuscany is naturally hilly, so you’ll need a reasonable level of fitness to enjoy the trip.
On this trip, there will be a single leader that rides with the group, and another that drives the support vehicle (acting as a back marker where needed).
While cycling, the support vehicle can only be used in medical emergencies.
As your riding will mostly be done on sealed roads with the occasional gravel cycle path, there are no technical cycling skills required – but given the hills involved, we do suggest practicing riding downhill so you’re comfortable with this once the trip begins.
If you feel like doing all the riding but with less effort, we have the option of hiring an electric bike (e-bike) on this trip.

Biking through Tuscany with Intrepid was a highlight of my travels. I’d recommend it to any casual rider looking for a new way to experience Italy. The Intrepid team does travel right!

5 stars for the itinerary, schedule, activities, smooth organisation, meals, quality of bikes, communication, guides (Tommaso and Ivan went above and beyond for us). Overall I had a great time and would totally recommend this trip to everyone. This trip wouldn’t have been nearly as good if I tried to organise it myself - everything was made so easy and I felt like a local with the support from our guides. I was only disappointed by the quality of accommodation - B&Bs in Florence and Lucca were basic but nice, however accommodation in Vinci, Barga, Castelnuovo and Pisa was unpleasant (mold in the showers, broken shower heads, stained bedsheets, cigarette packs in non-smoking rooms, ancient dirty carpets, only one room key for two solo travellers sharing) - I hope this can be improved

An absolutely fabolous week with family that were non cyclist, and would definitely recommend it for that. The lead crew and driver were excellent and contributed to the great week and enjoyment. If your after more of a cycling challenge this may not be the trip for you, with some very short days on the bike and a day of not cycling and no freedom to cycle on your own if you wanted too. However, for a first time cycling holiday it is excellent. Too much bus transport to get to the start of days cycling. The itinerary could very easily be improved. Also, you should carefully check the accommodation, as this trip's Hotels were well below acceptable standards for the cost of the trip.

The iTuscany bike tour blew me away. Riding from Florence to Pisa with my husband, adult child, and then amazing group of 13 was unforgettable. Gorgeous mountain rides, charming villages and an unforgettable wine tasting made this the best trip ever! Thank you Tomasso and Ivan for sharing your love of Tuscany and cycling!

Incredible tour of Tuscany, great level of cycling for a fit-ish novel cycler. Tour leader and driver were exceptional in their attentiveness and organisation. Great itinerary!

This trip absolutely exceeded my expectations, and that’s taking into consideration all the previous positive reviews. I’d never been on a cycling tour and i wasn’t sure what to expect, especially as I’m not a very experienced cyclist. Ivan was an outstanding tour leader, he kept us well informed of everything and was extremely supportive. Some of the hills were a little challenging but there is the option (and no shame) for an e-bike or to ride in the support van. Mika had the bikes all ready to go each day and had everything prepared so we barely had to lift a finger. He did this with such positive energy. The scenery on the tour is spectacular and the Tuscan towns were divine. Another successful Intrepid tour for me

Was an amzing trip! I would do it again! Even if it rains every day. My goal was to be able to eat pasta every day and not gain any weight, and have fun doing it! Goal accomplished and then some.
