Trip Informations
Retrace the steps of the Roman, Ottoman and Habsburg Empires on this cycling adventure along the mighty Danube River. Over eight days, you’ll ride through small villages, lowland forests and lush farmland as you cycle from Vienna to Budapest, passing through Slovakia. Discover the Baroque style at the Schonbrunn Palace or get lost in the cobbled laneways of Komarom – a spa city with one foot in Hungary and the other in Slovakia. Visit the architectural jewel of the Danube River – the Esztergom Basilica – and pass by the white-hued Bratislava Castle. Celebrate a day in the saddle with a luxurious soak in one of Budapest's steaming baths, then maybe spend the night at the iconic ruin bars. If you’re seeking an active adventure – cycling is the best way to experience the cosmopolitan cities along the Danube.
Why you’ll love this trip
verified
Follow the Danube downstream, passing romantic castles, small villages and lowland forests – the best way to see Eastern Europe is on two wheels!
verified
Cycle leafy paths away from the traffic of main roads and cities, from vibrant Vienna to cosmopolitan Bratislava and bohemian Budapest. Away from the tourists, you’ll have a better chance of connecting with local cultures!
verified
Spend some time at the domed Basilica of Esztergom – the biggest church in Hungary – and see how it’s reflected in the still waters of the Danube Bend. Then, make your way into Budapest and indulge in one of the steaming public baths.
verified
Straddle the borders of Hungary and Slovakia in the historic spa town of Komarom and soothe your sore muscles during one of the optional spa visits.

By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Tuuur Foundation partner, World Bicycle Relief. Donations provide school kids, health workers, and farmers in far-out areas with bicycles that provide access to education, healthcare, and income.
Is this trip right for you?
verified
To complete this trip, it’s important that you’re both confident and competent in riding a bicycle.
verified
On this trip, we have a single leader who rides with the group and another who drives the support vehicle (acting as a back marker where needed). Where the vehicle cannot travel directly with the cyclists (e.g. a cyclists-only path) your leader will assign a person from the group to act as a back marker.
verified
While the cycling distances are relatively long – sometimes up to 75 km – the terrain of the Danube as it flows downstream is naturally flat, so you’ll only need a reasonable level of fitness to enjoy the trip. But remember, we will always have the support vehicle on hand if you need to take a break for an hour or a day.
verified
As accommodation on this trip is twin-share, single travellers will share a room with another traveller of the same gender. This trip is a great opportunity to get to know other like-minded people, so embrace it while you can. If you’d prefer not to share, a single room supplement is available at an additional charge.

This trip is part of a longer itinerary. You might be joining travellers who have already spent some time together. If you have more time to explore, you might like to check out Cycle Central Europe & the Danube trip.

Guided Intrepid Cycle the Danube tour, from Vienna to Budapest.
It was a really enjoyable tour. Our guides Ede and Tomi were really good. They provided lots of useful tips at each of the towns/cities we stayed overnight at.
On the road the ensured we were weren't wanting for anything, ensuring we had regular stops and made sure we visited lots if places of interest. Both were very knowledgeable out Slovakia and Hungary and happy to answer questions.
The bicycles we road we in great condition and Ede even changed the tyre we one of the group had a puncture.
Overall the riding was not too strenuous, we rode anout 382kms with 1045m elevation over 21h on the saddle for the week.
I thoroughly enjoyed the tour.

This trip was a lot of fun with great people. The trip leader Tomi was extremely knowledgeable. It was a real sense of accomplishment to bike about 350 km, especially because the first two days were very windy (bring a light handkerchief for the road dust). The most scenic day on the bike was the last one, into Budapest. Highlights for me were the church in Estergom and the local bathhouse in Komarno, which was a totally different experience than the baths in Budapest (also great). Booking an extra night on both sides, Vienna and Budapest, were well worth it, to have some time to explore the sites and museums.

Biking on the Danube was our first experience with an organized tour. We thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to another cycling guided tour. Our guide Gabor and driver Zoran were excellent in so many ways. The encouragement to prepare for long rides was well worth abiding by, as we covered considerable distances.
Our group of 8 was mainly seniors, but I think we fared well and met the challenges. Our young guide Gabor was competent, entertaining and well prepared despite this being his first group to lead this season. We would highly recommend this adventure. Mike & Louise

This was a trip of a lifetime. Possibly the best way to see any country - cycling on a bike!
Well organised, good choice of hotels, experienced tour guides, great recommendations for meals, and safety was a priority.
Astrid and Tomi were great tour leaders, always helpful, extremely witty and ensured we were one harmonious group.
My husband and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary during the tour, and Astrid and Tomi arranged a surprise dinner “party” for us! It was truly memorable.
We’re looking a doing a cycle tour any where in the world at least once a year!

The tour was well organised and occasionally challenging, which kept things fun!
Our leaders, Tomi and Dani were super and we had plenty of energy-boosting snacks along the way. I appreciated the thoughtful dinner recommendations and felt the itinerary packed in a lot of gems without feeling exhausting. Highlights were visiting the Belvedere art gallery, (an optional extra), cycling through woody areas, and Komárno. The tour group were a friendly bunch and have inspired me to buy my own bike!
