Trip Informations
Get your legs moving on a Balkan cycling adventure from Dubrovnik to Sarajevo. Ride along the Ciro Trail – a new rail trail that follows the now defunct Austro-Hungarian railway line, visit the Ostrog Monastery and take in the coastal views as you follow the shoreline of the Bay of Kotor. Explore Kostar – the 5th-century UNESCO World Heritage-listed city – and Mostar to see the bridge divers hurl themselves off the Old Bridge into the Neretva River. As you ride, pass abandoned hamlets, local shepherds, scenic flats and rolling country and spend free evenings soaking up the local culture.
Why you’ll love this trip
See Mostar's famous bridge divers hurl themselves from the stones of Stari Most (Old Bridge), which has spanned the Neretva River for centuries.
Cycle along two sections of the Ciro Trail – this new rail trail follows the now defunct Austro-Hungarian railway line.
Ride the shoreline of the stunning Bay of Kotor – the winding bay of the Adriatic Sea.
Visit the incredible Ostrog Monastery –the Serbian Orthodox Church carved directly into the cliffs, high up in the large rock of Ostroska Greda.
Explore small villages, historical cities, abandoned hamlets, shorelines and rolling country hills on two wheels.
Is this trip right for you?
To complete this trip, it’s important that you are both confident and competent in riding a bicycle.
You’ll have a leader that rides with the group, and another that drives the support vehicle (acting as a back marker where needed). Where the vehicle cannot travel directly with the cyclists (e.g. a cyclists-only path) your leader will assign a person from the group to act as a back marker.
While the cycling distances on this trip are relatively short (the longest ride is only 60 km), the terrain of the Balkans is naturally hilly and the climate often warm. You’ll need a reasonable level of fitness to enjoy the trip, but the support vehicle is always on hand if you need to take a break for an hour or a day.
As your riding is done mostly on sealed roads with the occasional gravel cycle path, there are no technical cycling skills required. Given the hills, we do suggest practicing riding downhill, so you’re comfortable once the trip begins.
As there are cobblestones and many stairs in most European towns, and space in our support van is limited, it's strongly recommended that you leave any wheelie bags/cases at home and bring a backpack instead.
This trip is part of a longer itinerary. You might be joining travellers who have already spent some time together. If you have more time to explore, you might like to check out our Cycle Croatia & the Balkans trip.

My husband, Mike and I were very impressed with our Balkan bike ride. We got to see a fascinating part of the world with amazing history and magnificent country side. Like all Intrepid bike riding trips we've done this one attracted resilient, kind and fun loving people who loved an adventure. Also typical of Intrepid the leader, Davor was brilliant and his back up team so helpful. I would highly recommend this trip.

This bike trip was AMAZING. They warm you up with an easy first day of riding, and then things get hilly!! WORTH IT for these absolutely divine views. Every ride was different from the next— beaches, mountains, parks— and our guide Davor was INCREDIBLE.

Note there are huge inaccuacies in this itinerary, distances, elevation, towns visited and staying in. The whole trip is on trafficked roads except for tiny part on last day.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this trip. It provided an introduction of Balkans complex old and recent history and culture. The days of cycling in different regions was amazing. We were fortunate with the weather and border crossing. No issues with delay or days without cycling. The group was fantastic and our tourleader/ support man Davor and Igor are an excellent team. Both guys work extremely hard to ensure you have the best cycling experience in the Balkans.

It was a great trip! Well organized by Zoran and his crew. For someone who cycles a lot, it was not particularly challenging. The landscape was beautiful.

A fantastic tour with unforgettable experiences. Our tour leader Zoran made this a special trip for everyone with his knowledge, guidance, support and expertise. My travel companions could not have been better - a special group led by a special team in Zoran and Ivan! I wish we could do it all over again.

This was my first cycling trip, and Mario and Davo Vorda made it unforgettable. The supportive fellow tourists were exceptional. I’m grateful to Claire, Shelagh, Dave, Sue, Heather, Andrew, and Jitka for their encouragement. This is the best tour group I've ever joined, and I look forward to more with Intrepid.

I've thoroughly enjoyed and loved this trip. Beautiful scenery, lots of culture, complex history. It's not only a cycling trip it's been a wonderful learning experience about the history of the Balkans. A good mix of cycling and visiting historic sites. Highly recommend for those who like me like to witness history on site.
