Is this trip right for you?
verified
While the cycling distances on this trip are relatively short (anywhere from 10 to 80 km / 6 to 50 miles of cycling each day) the terrain of the Gifu Prefecture is naturally hilly and the climate can vary dramatically. Most people with a reasonable level of fitness will enjoy the trip, but you will always have the support vehicle on hand if you need to take a break for an hour or a day.
verified
To complete this trip it is important that you are confident and competent in riding a bicycle, both solo and in a group environment.
verified
While we always aim to ride to our next accommodation, outside of the main cities a support vehicle will also be with you at all times. In Japan, we can fit a maximum of four cyclists in the support vehicle.
verified
On this trip we have a single leader that rides with the group, and another that drives the support vehicle (acting as a back-marker where needed). Where the vehicle cannot travel directly with the cyclists (e.g. a cyclists-only path) your leader will assign a person from the group to act as a back-marker.
verified
If you feel like doing all the riding but with less effort we have the option of hiring an electric bike (e-bike) on this trip. Limited sizes are available so book quickly!
verified
When we aren't cycling on this trip, we primarily use public transport, which is efficient and convenient in Japan. Please pack light and compact as you will be expected to transport your luggage between train stations and to hotels, which can include going up and down multiple flights of stairs in crowded areas.
verified
Double rooms in Japanese hotels can be smaller than you may be used to (e.g. 20 sqm). Every effort will be made to accommodate double room requests. However, during busy periods, there may be occasions when we are unable to offer a double room, so a twin room will be provided.
Itinerary

Cycle Japan was an awesome experience - with many highlights and memories. Each day was different, with diverse scenery and experiences. The itinerary was well planned with sometimes challenging but manageable distances and terrain. Our Leader Yusuke was terrific. I would highly recommend.

I read the travel information first. Flew to Japan. Spent 3 days looking around Tokyo. Trained to Kyoto. Went down to the peninsula and did 4 days walking the Kamanu Kodo. Went back to Kyoto to start the bike trip. I am Australian, our fellow riders were American and English we got on well. The second day we had to take our luggage 700 metres to the Subway as it couldn't fit in the only van. The only day It rained on us while riding we arrived early at our accommodation to be met by hotel staff who would not process us all ( wet to the skin, shoes full of rain water ). Other than that, a most memorable and thought provoking experience. One of the best bike tours that I have experienced.

Apart from a bad mishap at the start of the tour with our accommodation, this was a great experience. Knowledgeable guides, great bikes (eBikes), our first E experience and a good itinerary. Our favourite experiences were riding away from the big cities along the coast, villages and hills of the Noto peninsula.

Overall the cycling was good and the tour members lovely. We had some good guides and good bikes However, the cost versus what we got was pretty mediocre. It felt like an expensive trip done on the cheap considering the Yen to pound/dollar conversion. Japan is actually quite cheap. We even had a day we had to transport our own luggage, i expect my luggage to be taken care of. The hotels were mediocre and the inclusive food, ok. One day got rained off, the company quoted force majeure so we had to pay for our own transport to the next location. Japan is a lovely country and if not for some knowledgeable tour members sorting out interesting places/ food when off the bike, we would not have had such a lovely experience. i would go back to Japan, but not with the company.

This is an interesting replacement itinerary for the noto peninsula. But I did miss the charming Japanese inns (Ryokans) from this itinerary as you are mainly staying up large hotels in small rooms. The cycling is pleasant enough and there are few inclines. The bikes used are in very good condition. However please insure that during any free time you familiarize yourself with local restaurant reservation systems such as tabalog, otherwise you may go hungry. I would also suggest doing your own research to find out about local souvenirs and local food specialities in each area as this information was not shared with us. The local support team were excellent. I have provided my comments on the lead guide directly to intrepid.
