Trip Informations
Bring the family together for a hands-on Costa Rican adventure from San Jose to Manuel Antonio. Learn about animal conservation with a naturalist at Proyecto Asis, hike beneath towering Arenal Volcano, cross Lake Arenal by boat and explore the cloud forest and hanging bridges of Monteverde. Visit a family farm, make casado in a local home and trek through Manuel Antonio National Park, keeping watch for three-toed sloths, monkeys and iguanas. With free time to swim and relax, this your family’s chance to discover the incredible biodiversity of this tropical wilderness.
Why you’ll love this trip
Prepare traditional casado with the Delgado family in their home, learning how Costa Rica’s classic lunch of rice, beans, salad and tortillas comes together.
Get up close to the unique wildlife of Costa Rica on a guided tour of an animal sanctuary, where each resident – sloths, monkey, macaws and more – has a rescue and recovery backstory.
Hike in Arenal National Park for an impressive view of the volcano before taking a boat ride along the lake to try and spot some local wildlife.
Walk along suspension bridges in Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve for the best biology lesson the kids have ever had.
Immerse yourself in nature on a guided walk with a naturalist guide in Manual Antonio National Park. The kids will love spotting sloths and listening for the evocative call of howler monkeys.
Is this trip right for you?
Make sure you pack some sturdy and comfortable shoes as you’ll be walking around cities and towns and through forests and jungles on this trip.
There are a few days of long travel on this trip as you’ll be covering a lot of Costa Rican ground. These drives are along smooth roads in new and comfortable vehicles, and are great for games, chats and scenery spotting. You’ll also make interesting stops along the way to break up the longer drives.
Is it hot in here? You’re in tropical Central America, so it can get very humid, although nighttime and locations at higher elevations can get chilly. Carry plenty of water, dress in light clothing and bring a waterproof jacket. We’ll give you every opportunity to cool off with a swim.
With so much to see and do, Costa Rica can sometimes be expensive. Expect to pay more than you would in other Central American countries for a lot of things.

Allan was an excellent tour leader who made the trip even more special for our group. One evening he made a delicious guacamole that we all enjoyed. Another day, he took us to a soccer field as most of the kids in our group were soccer fans. As soon as we entered the field, local kids asked if we want to play together, and it was one of the favorite experiences for everyone. The animal rescue was another highlight of the trip. Everywhere we went, it was very apparent that other guides knew Allan and were all very friendly. We had a great trip and enjoyed the family holiday.

We had a wonderful experience on the trip: it was a great combination of nature, culture and relaxation. Our tour leader Allan found a great balance between organizing and giving everyone options to explore on their own. He also kindly opened his home to the full group for a wonderful dinner. Another highlight was setting up a mejenga street soccer game for our kids, which was fantastic. Highly recommend as destination and Allan as tour guide.

We enjoyed every stop on this itinerary and each activity organized by Intrepid. My 11-year-old child especially loved the visit to Proyecto Asís, particularly the volunteering experience feeding the animals. Edgar is an excellent guide/tour leader; everything ran perfectly, and we felt completely safe at all times. Pura vida!

We saw everything we hoped to - waterfalls, snakes, sloths, macaws and a whole host of monkeys! Prepare to be fed very well! You need cash and can’t rely on the atm’s. Our guide, Emil, was excellent. In all an awesome trip enjoyed by all!
