Trip Informations
Steeped in centuries of tradition and full of culinary prowess, Japan is awash with sights to see and histories to uncover. From Kyoto to Tokyo, you’ll spend 11 days exploring the heart of Japan. Stay in a monastery in Koya-san, walk part of the Nakasendo Highway, learn about the sobering history of Hiroshima and cruise along the Sumida River in Tokyo. Be tempted by tempura, savour your sushi and sip shochu as you explore the endless diversity of Japan with your small group, all with a local leader who knows all the best places by your side.
Why you’ll love this trip
verified
Discover Japan's most iconic city sites, from the geiko (geisha) district and Edo-period Nijo Castle in Kyoto to the temple district and contemporary highlights of Tokyo.
verified
Learn more about the sobering past of Hiroshima at the memorial park, museums and monuments dedicated to the victims – these sites now advocate for world peace, serving as a reminder of the devastation of war.
verified
Feast on okonomiyaki – Japan’s signature savoury pancake of egg, cabbage, soba noodles and meat or seafood – at an included dinner in Hiroshima.
verified
Meet the locals over a home-cooked dinner during your stay in a ryokan (a traditional Japanese inn) in the mountain town of Tsumago – a village preserved from the Edo period.
verified
Spend a night in Koya-san’s Shukubo Temple and learn about the customs of traditional Japanese accommodation as you share vegetarian meals with the monks who run the lodgings.
Is this trip right for you?

Japan is best explored on foot and by public transport. You’ll need to be fit enough to spend most of each day on your feet and handle your luggage as you navigate busy train stations. We recommend comfortable shoes and packing light.

In some destinations, you may be staying in a ryokan, which is a Japanese-style inn. It's a great taste of tradition, however, not everyone finds futon mattresses on the tatami floor, tiny bathrooms and proximity to other guests as comfortable as Western-style hotels. This is important to consider if you have problems with your back or knees, as the surface is firm and there may be no other furniture such as chairs in the room. Read more about ryokans here: https://www.tuuur.com/adventures/traditional-japanese-ryokan/ . https://www.tuuur.com/adventures/traditional-japanese-ryokan/ (https://www.tuuur.com/adventures/traditional-japanese-ryokan/)

Double rooms in Japanese hotels can be smaller than you may be used to (for example, 20 sq m). Every effort will be made to accommodate double room requests. However, during busy periods, there may be occasions when we are unable to offer a double room, so a twin room will be provided.

Best trip I've ever taken - and I've travelled a lot. Beautifully organized, balancing big cities, small towns, and countryside with activities from relaxed to active, plus great food and fascinating insights throughout. Our guide Dai was grounded, helpful and genuinely added positivity. Japan left a deep impression. Highly recommend!

Japan is a complex and wonderful country, and we were given the opportunity to explore a wide variety of places. Great cities, spiritual sites, gardens and temples, the very moving museum and Peace Memorial in Hiroshima, modern art (Y. Kusama) in Matsumoto, onsens, and lovely countryside on the ancient Nakasendo trail - I had so many highlights. Our excellent, knowledgeable guide Toshi made all this easy for us to navigate. He also went above and beyond the necessary to help everyone find their special places of interest.

That trip was one of the best present for my birthday. I met amazing people - Claire and Matthew, Travis and Xander, Gerard and Jennifer. And of course our lovely team leader - June, which managed to bring together strangers from all over the world and leave a feeling of friendship, peace and pleasure from the trip in each of us.

This is a great tour of Japan which fits in so much in a relatively short time, and gets the mix of organised activities and free time exactly right (for us). If you’re lucky enough to get Yuki Nakano as your guide you’ll have a fantastic trip, she is an absolutely delightful guide, knowledgable, well organised and SO helpful
