Trip Informations
Discover incredible, lush Costa Rica and understand why this part of the world is called the ‘rich coast’. This 15-day adventure, beginning and ending in lively San Jose, is a journey through the jungles, farmlands, beaches and cities of a pure Central American location. Stay with a local family in Santa Rosa de Pocosol and help your hosts prep a traditional meal. Soak in springs that get their heat from an active volcano in La Fortuna and take on a huge array of nature-based optional activities in the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Spot three-toed sloths in the thickets of the Manuel Antonio National Park, then relax beneath swaying palms on the nearby beaches.
Why you’ll love this trip
Swap the concrete jungle for real jungle on a journey across waterways, hot springs, palm-lined beaches and rainforests to spot Costa Rica’s creatures such as capuchins, ocelots and sloths.
Spot long-nosed tapirs, white-faced capuchin monkeys, ocelots and three-toed sloths on this wildlife adventure – Costa Rica is home to many exotic animals, and this trip puts you in the perfect position to see them all.
Go deeper than the average tourist with a homestay in a quiet agricultural community – the perfect opportunity to experience local life and practice your Spanish. You’ll even have an informal cooking lesson with the locals to make dinner!
Hop aboard a riverboat to Tortuguero, a region popular for its canals that attract both human and wildlife visitors, most notably local green turtles, which come at night to nest on the sandy beaches.
Visit the indigenous Maleku community to share a traditional meal and learn about their way of life – this small tribe has big ambitions for regenerating local forests and natural habitats.
Is this trip right for you?
Many of the activities (both included and optional) on this trip take place in the great outdoors. This means you'll need to be prepared to deal with insects and occasionally rustic conditions. It's all part of immersing yourself in this natural paradise.
Costa Rica is generally hot year-round, and from May to October can be pretty wet too. At nighttime and in locations at higher elevations it can get chilly. Protect yourself from the sun, bring light clothing you can layer and a waterproof jacket, and stay hydrated. Please carefully consider which time of the year you'll feel most comfortable travelling.
There are many opportunities to get active on this adventure. Some of the optional activities require a moderate level of fitness and sturdy walking shoes. If you'd prefer to take it easy, however, there are plenty of other things you can do instead.
The homestay is a wonderful opportunity to witness everyday local life. A hearty homecooked dinner and breakfast will be served during your stay, which can be a lot more basic than what you're used to.
With so much to see and do, Costa Rica can sometimes be expensive. Expect to pay more than you would in other Central American countries for a lot of things.

Amazing trip. Saw loads of animals, birds and interesting plant life, and enjoyed trying local food, meeting people and learning about Costa Rica. Sofi our tour leader was brilliant, and lovely group of people from 7 countries. Good choice of optional activities and those I did were excellent.

We absolutely loved this trip. The itinerary is incredibly rich and diverse, taking you through very different parts of Costa Rica and showcasing a wide variety of ecosystems, wildlife and landscapes. We especially loved Tortuguero, which felt more laid-back and less touristy, before gradually moving on to famous highlights such as Monteverde and Manuel Antonio. The optional activities do add significantly to the overall cost, so it's worth budgeting for them in advance. That said, they were absolutely worth it for us. We tried so many things for the first time and had the time of our lives. The flexibility also allowed us to personalise the trip and enjoy some independent time as a couple, while Intrepid took care of all the logistics between destinations. We were lucky to have a wonderful group that gelled really well together, a kind and caring tour leader, and a fantastic mix of experiences throughout. Overall, an unforgettable trip and a brilliant introduction to Costa Rica.

Pedro was a phenomenal guide and his enthusiasm, sense of humor, and kindness made this trip worthwhile. I would caution you that you are going to be paying for ALOT of activities out of pocket, you don’t realize how much is NOT Included until you go on this trip. Do the night walk in Tortuguero! It was one of the best included activities of the trip and the people who did not do it were sorely disappointed.

5 out 5 stars ! If you are thinking of taking a trip with Intrepid , do it! It will be the best decision ever. All the guess work is taken out and it will be stress free.. Not only does Intrepid use local guides, they care, they give back to the community. My trip in Costa Rica was great! Our group leader Sofi was AMAZING and I really enjoyed getting to know our small group (12 ppl in all) I am so happy that I took a chance and booked my vacation with Intrepid. This will be the only way I travel from now on. Thank you Sofi, thank you Intrepid !

We just completed the Intrepid Classic Costa Rica tour. I highly recommend doing this if you are interested in nature and the creatures within. We covered a wide range of microclimates and ecosystems that exist in Costa Rica. There was a great balance of activity and free time. Our tour leader, Leonardo Araya was absolutely fabulous and if you can book any kind of trip with him, you will not be disappointed. He is incredibly knowledgeable, passionate, calm, organized, happy and interesting - he feels like family after only a couple of weeks. We were lucky enough to have a stellar group of people in our group as well and that made the experience even better. It was a magical time.

The classic costa rica trip was very enjoyable. Leo was a very knowledgeable and well organised guide. We learnt a lot about the flora and fauna as well as the cultural and political context of Costa Rica. I liked being able to choose from a range of optional activities.
