Journey through lush rainforests, navigate scenic rivers and explore the traditional villages of this beautiful region. Hang out with orangutans in Sepilok, cruise along the Kinabatangan River, unwind on the shores of Manukan Island and get a taste of vibrant city life in Kota Kinabalu. This restorative deep dive into nature will undoubtedly leave you wanting to return again and again.
Why you’ll love this trip
Visit endangered orangutans at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre – a facility that provides care for orphaned and confiscated primates and other local wildlife.
Learn about a social enterprise that empowers women in the mountainous village of Kampung Kiau and enjoy a traditional lunch of regional favourites.
Soak up the calm beach vibes with two relaxing days on Manukan Island where you’ll get up close to diverse marine life on a snorkelling trip.
Search for pygmy elephants and proboscis monkeys as you cruise the Kinabatangan River on a water safari.
Savour local cuisine, like roti canai and teh tarik, during food tastings on a heritage walk in Sandakan.
Is this trip right for you?
As you travel across Borneo, you’ll stay in a variety of accommodation, from standard hotels to jungle lodges. Some accommodation may have less amenities than a standard hotel, but the unique locations and proximity to nature makes them worth it.
This trip doesn't include climbing Mt Kinabalu. If this is something that interests you, check out our Sabah Adventure (TMSC).
This trip includes time spent travelling in a private vehicle with your group, where space may be limited and conditions may feel a bit snug. It's all part of the adventure and a great way to get to know your fellow travellers. There are a few long days of travel as you'll be covering a lot of ground. You will, however, make stops at interesting locations to break up the longer drives. Please read the Itinerary carefully for travel time estimates.

Our trip was most enjoyable. Our guide Stephanie was excellent and we had some unforgettable moments especially on the river. The group size was ideal and over the ten days we moved from being strangers to new friends.

Our Classic Borneo tour was great. We saw all the animals Borneo is famous for and learnt many interesting stories about WWII. Our guide was lovely, funny and accommodating to us all. Small group tours are great.

This is a great intro to Borneo. A trip with a relaxed pace appropriate to the location. Lots of wildlife and history. Reading Agnes Keith (Land Below the Wind, Three Came Home) is a good background before coming to Borneo.

Classic Borneo was a fantastic trip, our guide Edwin was amazing, his knowledge and passion ensuring we learnt alot, saw as much as possible and experienced so much without feeling rushed. We were lucky to see elephants crossing the river, beautiful sunsets/sunrises ,all the variety of monkeys and meet some wonderful inspirational people. Manakan Island also a highlight.

My wife & I have just completed the Classic Borneo trip, commencing 12:6/26. The agenda gives a great overview of Borneos wildlife, culture & history. Our guide, Talia was amazing with her friendly approach, ever so helpful and a wealth of knowledge. A good guide can make a trip, and she did that. Congratulations to Intrepid for their agenda and we have a whole new appreciation of Borneo. We had some unforgettable experiences with wild orangutans. Its highlights, the work being done by wildlife rescue organisations. Highly tecommend Dave & Diane

Our guide, Nostalia (Talia), made this trip feel so special. Her knowledge was amazing and she could answer all our questions. We saw lots of wildlife and the activities were fantastic. I would definitely recommend binoculars or a good zoom lense on your camera for spotting animals, and say yes to all optional activities as we were lucky enough to see an elephant on our night cruise.

I could not recommend the classic borneo tour enough. For anyone who wants to see wildlife, this tour was perfect. We had a variety of activities which we all enjoyed. Our guide, Nostalia was amazing, I can’t say a single bad thing about her. Talia made everyone in our group feel welcome and engaged with every single one of us throughout this tour. Talia went above and beyond to provide us with extra knowledge or activities throughout the tour which was amazing. Talia was also very enthusiastic this entire trip, having fun with us every step of the way! Talia made our group feel like a family.

The Classic Borneo trip is simply fantastic from start to finish. The way it is broken into wildlife, culture and relaxation make it the perfect choice. Borneo is magical. The accommodation is of a good standard and everything is organised perfectly. The places we visited were excellent and the people amazingly friendly. Our guide was the best!
