Journey through lush rainforests, navigate scenic rivers and explore the traditional villages of this beautiful region. Hang out with orangutans in Sepilok, cruise along the Kinabatangan River, unwind on the shores of Manukan Island and get a taste of vibrant city life in Kota Kinabalu. This restorative deep dive into nature will undoubtedly leave you wanting to return again and again.
Why you’ll love this trip
Visit endangered orangutans at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre – a facility that provides care for orphaned and confiscated primates and other local wildlife.
Learn about a social enterprise that empowers women in the mountainous village of Kampung Kiau and enjoy a traditional lunch of regional favourites.
Soak up the calm beach vibes with two relaxing days on Manukan Island where you’ll get up close to diverse marine life on a snorkelling trip.
Search for pygmy elephants and proboscis monkeys as you cruise the Kinabatangan River on a water safari.
Savour local cuisine, like roti canai and teh tarik, during food tastings on a heritage walk in Sandakan.
Is this trip right for you?
As you travel across Borneo, you’ll stay in a variety of accommodation, from standard hotels to jungle lodges. Some accommodation may have less amenities than a standard hotel, but the unique locations and proximity to nature makes them worth it.
This trip doesn't include climbing Mt Kinabalu. If this is something that interests you, check out our Sabah Adventure (TMSC).
This trip includes time spent travelling in a private vehicle with your group, where space may be limited and conditions may feel a bit snug. It's all part of the adventure and a great way to get to know your fellow travellers. There are a few long days of travel as you'll be covering a lot of ground. You will, however, make stops at interesting locations to break up the longer drives. Please read the Itinerary carefully for travel time estimates.

The tour was absolutely amazing. Mark Justin was a very knowledgeable local guide who taught me a lot about the rich culture of Borneo and its nature. We had some free time during the tour too which helped me to relax.

This was my second intrepid trip whilst both trips were very different I still enjoyed them both so much. As much as travelling through countries I've always found people who go on intrepid trips whatever their age or background get on well together and have an amazing time together.

Wonderfully led trip by our leader Jeffery. The trip was well paced and included enough key attractions to ensurie a modest Borneo travel experience. Well done Intrepid.

A wonderful, informative tour in Borneo, seeing wildlife, fish when snorkelling and local people when we learned from them about their work and life. Well balanced itinerary with time to ourselves as not a jammed itinerary of activities.

For any Australian considering visiting Borneo with Intrepid, I cannot recommend it highly enough. I was very moved by the Sandakan WWiI POW story.. The adventure takes you to the orangatangs, sunbears and on to the river to see beautiful birds and monkeys. There are many more interesting local experiences every day, never a dull moment but also time for relax and enjoy the trip. The expeirence and knowledge of our wonderful guide made this trip unforgettable.

Had a great trip and we were lucky to see the Borneo Big 5 in the wild! You get to see lots of wildlife and learn about the culture of Borneo - its busy but with some downtime too. I particularly loved the Orangutans - both in Sepilok and in the wild, Pygmy elephants (we were definitely in the right place on the river at the right time!) and the Manukan Island stay which was fantastic despite the torrential rain on the first day. Its definitely hot and sweaty and at times we got soaked but certainly a trip to remember with lots of special memories. Jeffry our guide was also fantastic and so knowledgeable and enthusiastic - how he spotted the wildlife I have no idea! He also went out of his way to make our experience a great one - including us all attending a local wedding! All in all I would recommend this trip if you love wildlife and new adventures.
