Trip Informations
Why you’ll love this trip
Take in the iconic scenery of the Yangtze River as you sail through the dramatic Three Gorges on a three-day cruise.
Hike through the misty forests of Emei Shan for a stay in a monastery, where you’ll wake to the sound of drums and prayers in the morning Buddhist ritual.
Get up close to giant pandas in Chengdu and learn about the work being done to preserve this ancient species.
Cycle through the Chinese countryside against backdrops that look straight out of a painting, like the striking limestone karsts of Yangshuo.
Zip through the country from north to south on its efficient high-speed rail network and experience world-class wonders, from the ancient Great Wall and Terracotta Warriors to the skyline and night markets of Hong Kong.
Is this trip right for you?
This trip is a true journey in the sense that we are covering huge distances and visiting many destinations along the way. Be prepared for long days of travel in between days packed with sightseeing.
With walks on the Great Wall and up Emei Shan (both of which have many steps!), you'll need a good level of fitness to get the most out of these activities. However, you'll have plenty of more relaxing days too, such as on the Yangtze River cruise or in the town of Yangshuo.
There is a variety of accommodation on this trip including hotels, guesthouses, monasteries and riverboats. They might not always be as comfortable as home, but each accommodation site will give you a different perspective on China.
While we finish in Hong Kong, due to our late afternoon arrival we do not include much free time or many activities here. We highly recommend staying a few extra days post-trip to make the most of this exciting city.
China’s world-class sites and experiences draw large numbers of local and international travellers. We recommend a little patience and comfortable shoes as you may need to wait before entering the more popular locations on your itinerary.
Itinerary
Cruise, hike and bullet train through China, from Beijing to Hong Kong
Experience a breadth of cultures, flavours and landscapes on this 19-day trip through China. Marvel at iconic attractions like the Great Wall, the Terracotta Warriors and the 71-m-tall World Heritage-listed Leshan Giant Buddha. Then, uncover the quieter side of the country with a cruise along the Yangtze River, a bike ride through the picturesque limestone karst landscapes of Yangshuo and a stay in a Buddhist monastery tucked into the mountains of Emei Shan. Dine on some of China’s most renowned (and spiciest) cuisine in Chengdu and then visit a research base dedicated to conserving giant pandas. Discover a land of epic history, lush countryside and dramatic vistas with a group of like-minded travellers and a knowledgeable local leader by your side.

This was our first time to China, and what a grand adventure we had! The trip itinerary provided an excellent overview of some of the key highlights as well as a few local hidden gems. There’s so much to see in this vast country, and our sampling captured both historically significant sights as well as the rapid move to modernity. Our guide, Dragon, provided expert management of all the details that can make or break a trip. We deeply appreciated his calm demeanor and years of professional experience traveling and managing groups. He’s committed to his craft and culture, and knows how to diplomatically balance everyone’s needs and ensure the group has fun. The inclusion of local guides at the various locations added to the experience .

This is a great way to travel to China for the first time without knowing the language. There was/is a lot of friction trying to do anything in China. The tour guides help you through all of it. Also, this itinerary is incredible. Highly recommend!

We spent 19days traveling around mainland China to Hongkong, hiking to a monestary through monkey forests to bike riding through Yangshou. Its the most beautiful country I have travelled so far and an experience of a lifetime. Everyone was so friendly and happy to see us there. Our tour leader Alan enthusiasm and excitement sharing the history was contagious. He definitely made the trip easier and unforgettable. Im pleased to say that im hooked and already planning my next trip around this beautiful country. Thank you Alan and thank you China 🙏

China Experience is something I’ll never forget. Get out of your comfort zone, you’ll see how big and lovely this world is! But, as a whole, despite some activities being a bit too athletic for me, it was a pleasure. If you’re looking for a trip with a lot of free time and wonderful guides (looking at you Doris and Patrick), Intrepid is for you

We had the most fantastic trip! We really felt that we saw a lot of China and gained a far better understanding of the history and culture as well as seeing all of the big ticket locations. Our tour guide, Doris, was wonderful. She was funny, organised, very approachable and gracious. She made the trip for us! The trip up to the monastery was breathtakingly beautiful. The thousands of steps were worth it. An unforgettable adventure!
