Trip Informations
To see all five Stans in Central Asia, this epic trip will start in the grand Ashgabat of Turkmenistan, explore Samarkand in Uzbekistan, then head to Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. See the best of the Silk Road and deep dive into the fascinating history, captivating landscapes and beautiful culture that’s intertwined throughout this region. You'll stay in yurts near Lake Issyk-Kul, explore Registan Square in Samarkand and watch the eternal flame of Darvaza Crater – a 70-m-wide hole in the Karakum Desert known as ‘The Gates of Hell’. From wide open plains full of wild horses to homestays and dinners with locals, there’s so much to see, do and learn in this region – so why not spend 24 days uncovering all you can, with a local leader by your side?

Is this trip right for you?
verified
Central Asia is a destination for the adventurous and the open-minded. Alongside its rich culture and history, comes poor infrastructure, lengthy processes and basic facilities. Patience and flexibility will ensure you enjoy this region to its fullest.
verified
This trip involves long travel days on rough and winding roads. You’ll be travelling by private vehicle, and in one day you could be driving anywhere between three and ten hours. Please review the Itinerary for more details.
verified
Temperatures vary greatly throughout this trip, from below zero to over 40 ºC depending on the location. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and plan to wear layers.
verified
Tourism is strictly controlled in Turkmenistan. If you’re accustomed to more freedom to explore and take photos as a tourist, you will find the experience differs here. Locals are fiercely proud of their nation and its leaders.
verified
You’ll stay in a range of accommodations on this trip, including multishare arrangements in yurts, homestays and guesthouses. Facilities are shared and basic, but the experiences are unforgettable.

The Central Asia express trip was incredible! It exceeded all expectations- we came knowing a little and left with not only so much more knowledge, but a deeper understanding of the history and turmoils these countries have experienced. The people are beautiful, resilient and passionate about their lands, cultures and future and all of this was exemplified by our fantastic guides- Serdar in (Turkmenistan) and Ulan the Great in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The 5 Stan’s should be on your bucket list of places to see!

I hadn't travelled on my own for over 30 years and chose Intrepid as a way back in on the recommendation of friends who spoke highly of their trips. They didn't disappoint providing a wonderfully supportive environment in which to travel through a part of the world I knew too little about. Our trip leader, Jam, was an absolute gem. The trip was excellently structured and provided a lifetime of memories and meaningful insights into the lives of the people whose lands we visited. The landscapes are breathtaking and the people so open. There's a whole world out there and I loved seeing this unique part of it with Intrepid.

Great introduction to a fascinating and lesser known part of the world. Beautiful scenery, architecture, culture and people. Quite a bit of travel on sometimes rough roads but worth the effort. Well planned and guided

Wonderful trip through the 5 Stans with excellent guides( Serdar in Türkmenistan for 5 days and Lucy for the remaining 20 days Uzbekistan/ Tajikistan/Kazakhstan/ Kyrgyzstan). Varied activities and nice to be able to walk as walking means for me , being more connected with the environment and increases the opportunity to engage with the local people. Highly recommended for a unique cultural experience.

The 5 Stans was a brilliant trip. Became very informed of Central Asia both politically and culturally. As this is such a large area, travel times can be quite long but what is needed to cover the countries. A good fitness level helps with the city and cross border walking. A robust attitude will allow you to embrace this part the wonderful world.

The Intrepid 5 Stans Express tour was fantastic! Amazing scenery and history. Delicious food! My tour leader Meerbek made the 24 day trip easy, interesting and fun. Visiting locals in their home for cooking, dancing or yurt building lessons was a highlight Highly recommended.
