Why you’ll love this trip
Take in the beautiful Lakes of Issyk-kul and Song Kol with stays in a traditional yurt camp.
Travel along the Chychkan River beneath the towering peaks of Kyrgyzstan’s Tien Shan range and take in the grand scenery with your small group of likeminded travellers.
Meet local masters and get to know the art of silk weaving and the secrets of Rishton ceramics – two of the most important items traded on the Silk Road.
Wander through the grand square of Registan in Samarkand and discover the imposing architecture from afar and the detailed craftmanship of the tiling up close.
Explore the ruins of the ancient city wall at Panjakent. Take in the beautiful Marquzor Lakes and share a delicious home-cooked lunch with a local Tajik family.
Is this trip right for you?
Central Asia is a remote destination, perfect for Tuuur travellers! You will venture well away from cities, right off the beaten track and be able to immerse yourself in local food, life and culture. Accommodation may on occasion be more basic than what you are used to, especially in local homes, guesthouses and at the yurt. Shower and toilet facilities will be limited in some places and non-existent in others. While the comfort level won't always be high, the rewards of living in true local style in this far-out part of the world are immeasurable.
This is an overland journey, so there will be some very long days of travelling and driving, often over rough terrain. This can be tiring and require patience. The vehicle we use is small enough to access places where the general road condition doesn't allow for buses, but this means it can be a cosy journey when the group is almost full. We find this is a great way for the group to bond and share an amazing journey together and there will be stops along the way to take photos and stretch your legs.
This trip spends one night at high altitude at Song-kol Lake. Some people can suffer from altitude sickness, regardless of your age or physical health. It’s recommended to not participate in any strenuous activity until you have time to gauge your reaction to the high altitude. See the ‘Health’ section of the Essential Trip Information for more details.

Highly recommend this tour to anyone travelling to Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The natural beauty of Kyrgyzstan is stunning, with Song-Kul Lake being a personal favourite. And Uzbekistan is rich in stunning historical architecture. Our tour guide, Nasiba, was amazing: she consistently went above and beyond and was such a wonderful and friendly person. She truly elevated the entire experience. Our driver, Vitaly, was also excellent and he did such a wonderful job safely navigating the remote roads in Kyrgyzstan.

This trip is an absolute must both countries are spectacular and the history so interesting. Miko, our Tour Leader, was amazing and kept us well informed and safe the entire trip. This was my 7th Intrepid tour and Miko is one of the best tour leaders I have had. Vitaly, our driver in Kyrgyzstan, kept us safe on the unsealed roads. The Yurt camps were great fun and for those who are wondering yes there are western flushing toilets at both camps.

I did the 27 day trip through the 3 stans & it was amazing start to finish. We had a great group & excellent leaders. The inclusions are outstanding. All 3 stans are different in their own right so picking a favourite may be difficult

You may chose this trip to see Uzbekistan but it is Kyrgystan that left the lasting impression for me. The gravel roads are worth every mile to appreciate it's people and beauty.

Central Asia Explorer was a wonderful trip with lots of variety. A wonderful combination of nature and culture! Unfortunately with rather little physical activity, but this can be seen in the programme. Our tour leader has offered a few optional hikes 👍

This trip is a great intro to central asia. The places we visited were great specially Kyrgyzstan, I can't get enough of it. Will definitely be visiting the country again. Our tour leader Svetlana was amazing, she goes above and vmbeyond her role and she decade the trip extra special and being with 5 other amazing women as companions thru the 17 day travel was icing on the cake! Our Kyrgyzstan driver Sergay was a character we never thought we needed. What an adventure! I can't recommend it enough. Central Asia is a destination you need to add on your list. Guaranteed for an unforgettable adventure!

This trip had a great balance of the natural world in Kyrgyzstan and history and culture in Uzbekistan. Both countries exceeded our expectations. We left having learned so much more about the fascinating political situations. Try to go when you can get to Song-Kol Lake, it is a real highlight. Ulan is a fabulous guide who looked after us all so well, and told us some amazing stories. You'll love this trip and come back with incredible photos and memories.

An exceptional journey, spanning two very different countries, with a wonderful group, our fantastic tour leader Miko, and driver Vitali. Thoroughly interesting and great fun throughout! Visit now, before mass tourism transforms both countries.:-)
