Trip Informations
Why you’ll love this trip
With included wildlife viewing experiences like game drives, tracking walks and safaris, you are guaranteed to encounter a diverse array of Africa’s iconic wildlife.
Wake up before dawn and scramble to the top of a massive Sesriem dune for a dramatic sunrise view across a vast sea of undulating sand.
Glide down Botswana's Okavango Delta on a mokoro, with a local at the helm using a pole to guide your journey through the rich waterways.
Discover the largest ruins in sub-Saharan Africa – Great Zimbabwe. This World Heritage-listed site dates back to the 11th century.
Chill out on the white sands of Zanzibar’s northern beaches and spend a night exploring the ornate alleyways of Stone Town.
Is this trip right for you?
This is an overland trip. That means you’ll be travelling with a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities, setting up your own tent and occasionally roughing it in the bush with no facilities – but unrivalled access to the wilderness. For more info on this style of travel, see our Africa overland page: https://www.tuuur.com/africa/overland https://www.tuuur.com/africa/overland (https://www.tuuur.com/africa/overland)
We use mokoros (small dugout canoes) to pass through the shallow waterways of the Okavango Delta to get to our campsite for the night.
At Usambara Mountains the group will do an easy hike to the beautiful Irente viewpoint.
Camp in the Serengeti National Park itself without fences between you and the animals. Your leader will brief you on the safety measures the group will need to take for the two nights spent in the park.
There are many optional activities on this trip. Please take this into consideration when budgeting.
As the early bird catches the worm, the early camper sights the animals. There will be many early starts either to make use of the better safari time or to beat the morning traffic on long travel days.

Phenomenal trip - would recommend this to anyone wanting to get the full Africa experience. The animals, the beautiful drives, the sunsets and the amazing crew that look after you all made this the best Intrepid I’ve been on.

The tour description is clear this is not a 5 star luxury tour but if you want to experience the countries first hand, learn about the people, politics, history and see some spectacular wildlife then you cannot go wrong. The tour team were exceptional in their organisation and knowledge

This short section of what was the vic Falls to Gorillas trip for me was incredible. The Serengeti is insane, our time spent here with the big cats was extraordinary. Simon, our chef made us delicious 5 star home cooked meals every day 3 times a day, so after a long day of game drives we knew we were coming back to a delicious feast. The 9 days on this leg were jam packed, but incredible.

A fantastic trip sure to test ones tolerance at times but well worth it.To travel with like minded people through all these countries and see so many amazing things is an experience of a lifetime. Our group had an age range of 76 to 30 and everyone contributed to an exciting adventure. At times you will be out of your comfort zone but those dusty days, bumpy roads, lack of a hot shower, early morning starts are made worthwhile with some incredible sights of scenery ,people, and animals

Africa Northbound exceeded all ky hopes and expectations of Africa. The staff were outstanding in every aspect. A fantastic way to see Africa with Intrepid taking care of all the logistics. A brilliant experience providing life-long memories. I cannot recommend this trip more highly. Superb.

I highly recommend the trip from Capetown to Victoria Falls. It is particularly great heading north. I can't recommend the segment from Victoria Falls to Zanzibar. There is simply too much time driving from place to place. If you're interested in the Serengeti, I'd strongly suggest flying to Tanzania from Victoria Falls and catching up with a tour there.

Starting in Cape Town we had amazing facilities and activities on the first leg. This leg had a much reduced facilities as you would expect in poorer countries. We did have amazing game drives in South Luangwa. The Great Zimbabwe ruins were very interesting and Lake Malawi was a beautiful location. Overall this leg of the trip was worse than the first one as it had a LOT of long travel days from 3am wake ups and 8pm arrivals. This was exhausting so be prepared for that.

I do not recommend this trip. Driving time in the brochure is grossly underestimated. Bus is extremely hot with no AC and poor suspension. Other competitors have buses with AC if you must do this journey
