Trip Informations
Discover the lives of Cambodian women from the 7th century to the 1970s under the Khmer Rouge on an eight-day expedition. With an all-women group and female leader by your side, you’ll roll around the street food markets of Siem Reap and the temple ruins of Angkor on the back of a tuk-tuk with a female driver. Have a home-cooked dinner with a local family at an off-the-beaten-track homestay, go on a private boat trip on Tonle Sap and try your hand at hyacinth weaving at the Rokhak Women Handicraft Centre. Then, toast to your adventure over dinner at a social enterprise empowering local youth with training and employment.
Why you’ll love this trip
Learn about the lesser-known experiences of the women living under the Khmer Rouge on a tour of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21 memorial) and Choeung Ek Killing Fields. Led by a female guide, you’ll learn about this tragic period of Cambodia’s history.
Volunteer at Project G – a community-led initiative run by Tuuur Foundation Partner Cambodia Rural Students Trust providing health education and women’s hygiene solutions to girls in rural Cambodia.
Live like a local in a rustic, off-the-beaten-track homestay in UNESCO World Heritage-listed Sambor Prei Kuk. Explore the village by bike, then sit down to a traditional, home-cooked meal prepared by your host family.
Visit Daughters of Cambodia – a social enterprise empowering the survivors of human trafficking by providing them with training and employment. Settle in for a relaxing hand and foot spa given by the women trained in the program.
Watch the sun rise over the sprawling Angkor temple complex, then take a guided tour of this archaeological site on a tuk-tuk with a social enterprise that provides job opportunities to local women.
Is this trip right for you?
You'll be spending a night with a local family on this trip. While the accommodation is shared and basic, this is a great opportunity to connect with the local people (and enjoy delicious home-cooked meals!). Please refer to the Special Information on Day 4 of your itinerary for more details on this simple homestay experience. You can also read more about the experience here: https://www.tuuur.com/adventures/cambodia-homestay-experience . https://www.tuuur.com/adventures/cambodia-homestay-experience (https://www.tuuur.com/adventures/cambodia-homestay-experience)
The stories and history shared at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21) and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek are confronting and many travellers will find them upsetting. This is an important part of Cambodia’s recent history that we feel is important for travellers to know. If you would prefer not to join these activities, your leader can recommend some alternatives. Further information on visiting the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek can be found here: https://www.tuuur.com/adventures/importance-visiting-cambodia-killing-fields/ . https://www.tuuur.com/adventures/importance-visiting-cambodia-killing-fields/ (https://www.tuuur.com/adventures/importance-visiting-cambodia-killing-fields/)
Temperatures and humidity can be high in Cambodia, especially when walking around sites like the Angkor complex, where there may be little shade. Be prepared by taking plenty of drink breaks and wearing appropriate sun protection. Some travellers find an umbrella useful to keep the sun off (this will also come in handy if it rains!).
You will visit a number of temples on this trip, and this requires a level of modesty. Be sure to bring clothes that cover your arms and pants or skirts that go past the knees. A light scarf is also a good idea for covering shoulders and arms when it’s hot.
