Is this trip right for you?
Please keep your luggage as small and light as possible. You'll be travelling on public transport where storage space is limited. You'll need to be able to lift your luggage into storage racks, walk across cobblestone streets with it and carry it up and down stairs.
Summer temperatures in Hungary and Romania can reach up to 40°C, which can be uncomfortable for those not used to the heat. Please consider the time of year you wish to travel and your suitability for that season. If travelling in summer, drink lots of water and remember to protect yourself from the sun. Bring layers to combat the heat, as well as sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.
Hotels in Europe often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together/apart.
If you have more time to explore the region you can extend your trip by starting your travels in Vienna, taking in the best of Central Europe before heading to Romania. Check out our trip 'Journey through Central Europe & Romania' (trip code AMSCC). Alternatively, you could head further south into Bulgaria with our 'Eastern Europe Explorer (trip code WMSEC). Most departure dates are designed to create these perfect combination trips.

First time with Intrepid and first time to Hungary and Romania. Fantastic experience, Victor was an excellent trip leader, great group of travelling companions, and experienced places and accommodations (pension in Vadu Izei and homestay in Viscri) that we would never have done travelling independently.

We thoroughly enjoy traveling with Intrepid because of the small group format, experience of the local leaders and variety of itineraries offered. We have learned a lot about new cultures. We enjoyed meeting fellow travelers along the way. The experience and friendliness of the tour leader is what encourages us to venture to places we may not have chosen to go to on our own. This particular trip to Romania, led by Silvana was highly informative and unique. We are a glad we joined this trip!

I had a fantastic time touring Hungary and Romania, two very beautiful countries. Our tour leader, Georgi, was friendly, well-organized, and knowledgeable, and the members of the group got along well and enjoyed each others' company. The locals were very friendly and kind too. Highlights include the two homestays (Ramona's place and the village of Viscri), and hiking the hillside in Brasov to the panoramic restaurant at the top. I had the opportunity to try some local dishes throughout the tour and enjoyed the food and beers. I also learned so much about the history and culture of Romania from the numerous local guides we had the opportunity to meet throughout the tour. Andra's tour in Brasov was particularly engaging and highly recommended. Thank you for another well-planned tour, Intrepid!

My second trip with Intrepid and another that was simply fantastic. A Holiday with a capital H. Adventure with local guides for people who hate simply cooking in the sun.
