Trip Informations
Why you’ll love this trip
Explore Central Asia – a fascinating mix of ancient Silk Road history, post-Soviet culture and redefined nations living in post-independence.
Learn about the Silk Road and its history at the Registan in Samarkand, the ancient Panjakent City Wall and the UNESCO-protected town of Khiva.
Take in the scenic views of Song Kol Lake and Issyk-kul Lake, where you may see flocks of sheep, goats and herds of horses with their nomadic herdsmen. Stay in a yurt camp nearby and live like the locals have for centuries in these traditional tents.
Spend a night with a local family in Turkmenistan. Be treated to traditional hospitality, gain an insight into the daily life of locals and feast on a delicious home-cooked lunch with a Tajik family.
Rub shoulders with locals and bargain in the bazaars. With your local leader by your side, you’ll learn what’s common and what’s different between these four stans.
Is this trip right for you?
Tourism is strictly controlled in Turkmenistan, On your own, you can explore nearby your hotel, visiting shopping centres or restaurants, but we recommend that further exploration is with your local leader. Please don’t take photos when not with your local leader. Photos of the streets, people in uniforms and many buildings are prohibited.
To visit Turkmenistan, Letters of Invitation is needed in advance to apply for your visa (which you can then get on arrival). There are difference visa requirements for different nationalities in all the countries visited on this trip, please see the ‘Passport and visas’ section of the Essential Trip Information for more details.
This is an overland journey, so there will be some very long days of travelling and driving, often over rough terrain. This can be tiring at times and will require patience at others, especially at border crossings.
Your accommodation may be basic on occasions. Shower and toilet facilities will be limited in some places and non-existent in others. While the comfort level won't always be high, the rewards of living in true local style in this far-out part of the world are immeasurable. There is one night of camping on this trip. Sleeping bags, mattresses and tents are provided, but there are no facilities at the campsite.
This trip is a combination of two trips. Please review the itinerary for details of when your fellow travellers and leader will change.

Great trip of 3 Stan’s - mountains, horses, yurts etc. Our group was just 9 then 4 for 2nd half. We saw much more than I anticipated. Make sure to do lots of reading and cultural prepn. Loved seeing horse market, Eagle training and snow capped mountains.

The best intrepid trip I’ve done despite a little apprehension and nerves initially as a solo woman and what to expect. Miko our guide was fantastic and a wealth of information and amazingly well organised. I felt completely safe at all times and able to completely enjoy these amazing countries and have good and engaged interaction with the local men and women in the different areas. Amazing people history wilderness and architecture.

More people need to come to this part of the World - come to Kyrgyzstan for the amazing scenery, Uzbekistan for the phenomenal architecture and Turkmenistan because it'll be like nowhere you've been before. And do it with Intrepid as if your trip was anthing like mine, it will have been the trip of a lifetime.

The 3 countries are very different culturally, politically and in landscape. Highly recommend travelling to this little known area. I am 67 and can assure the facilities are not basic so don't let that put you off! Wonderful leaders and fellow travelling companions. Sent from Outlook for Android

Three countries that are all starkly different and gob-smackingly amazing in different ways. A huge amount is crammed into the four weeks and you’ll come away with a feeling that you’ve done justice to each of them. The itinerary is excellent and the Intrepid guides were first class. It’s tough - you cover a lot of ground - but it’s worth it
