Trip Informations
Spend 20 days exploring the diversity of Indonesia, starting out by trekking to spot orangutans in the country’s wild west on the island of Sumatra and travelling east through Java and into Bali (everybody’s favourite island getaway for a reason). Move effortlessly from Christian Batak to Hinduism and Buddhism, remote jungles to vast beaches, volcano valleys to coffee plantations and streetside warungs to temple complexes. Far from being just another island getaway, each of Indonesia’s islands has something unique to offer and you can dive into it all with a small group of like-minded travellers and an expert local leader!
Why you’ll love this trip
Camp in Gunung Leuser National Park and trek to spot orangutans in their natural habitat. Then, stay in the Bukit Lawang Eco Lodge for an exciting jungle experience – you'll also be supporting the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program!
Hike up Sibayak Volcano in Sumatra for a scenic picnic at the summit and climb Mt Bromo in Java in the early hours of the morning for dazzling views over mist-laden volcanoes.
Cycle through the backcountry of Yogyakarta – a world of flower-studded fields, rice terraces and bright green grasslands – and discover Indonesia’s spiritual side at the ancient Borobudur Temple.
Take a guided walk through the jungle and rice paddies of Seloliman Nature Reserve, then sit back, relax and soak up the ambience in an eco-lodge under the stars.
Balance out all the activity and adventure with plenty of time to chill out away from the crowds at the beachside paradise of Pemuteran on Bali’s less-visited north coast.
Is this trip right for you?
This trip involves a fair amount of hiking and cycling, including trekking in the jungle and camping. A good level of fitness is required to make the most out of this trip.
Sumatra is less developed than other islands of the Indonesian archipelago. Due to limited tourism infrastructure, expect there to be bumpy and windy roads, some longer drives and more basic hotels. On the plus side, there are less tourists. Java is one of the largest islands in Indonesia, and this trip covers a lot of ground. Travel times can be long and delays are common. Where suitable, you'll travel by train instead of driving, which will make the journey more comfortable.
This itinerary spends one night camping in Gunung Lesuer National Park. Keep in mind this is jungle camping with twin-share tents and no facilities. Which is, of course, all part of the adventure. Gunung Leuser National Park is located in Aceh province, which is governed by Sharia Law. There are strict Sharia laws to comply to. Your leader will explain more, but conservative dress is required for these days and is recommended for the rest of this trip. It's a great idea to bring your own sarong.
It's important to pack light, as you will be expected to carry your bags onto and off of trains and walk them across short distances. Porters are available in most stations at an extra charge.
