Trip Informations
Go beyond Cairo’s headline sites on a journey through Egypt’s deserts and ancient sites. Walk among the White Desert’s snow-like limestone formations and Crystal Mountain, which shimmers in the sun. Stand beneath the Great Pyramids of Giza and the ancient Sphinx, then explore the quieter pyramid sites of Saqqara and Dahshur. Continue north to Alexandria’s Roman catacombs before travelling by 4WD into the Western Desert to Siwa Oasis, the Oracle of Amun and the Great Sand Sea. Meet local female artisans, tuck into a homecooked meal with locals and spend the night sailing from Aswan on a traditional felucca. End in Luxor among grand temples, royal tombs and monumental statues – an epic adventure.
Why you’ll love this trip
Explore the White Desert, where white sand appears to have blanketed the desert like snow and quartz formations rise from the dunes. You may also see Crystal Mountain glistening in the sun.
Stay the remote and surreal Siwa Oasis – wander ancient Shali Town and Castle, visit the Temple of the Oracle of Amun, then unwind at Cleopatra’s Bath.
Stand before the Great Pyramids of Giza – one of the Seven Wonders of the World – and see the mighty Sphinx. Then, visit Saqqara’s Step Pyramid and Dahshur’s Bent and Red pyramids – among Egypt’s oldest, largest and best preserved.
Sail overnight on a traditional felucca from Aswan, after visiting Philae and its Temple of Isis. Then, explore Luxor’s Karnak Temple, the Valley of the Kings and Colossi of Memnon.
Descend into Alexandria’s Kom el Shoqafa Catacombs – a maze of burial chambers. Then, visit the Roman Amphitheatre and trace the city’s Greco-Roman past.
Is this trip right for you?
Travelling on a felucca (traditional wooden boat) is awesome, but it's not for everyone. You will be sharing a sleeping area with your fellow group members for the night and a shared bathroom facility. You'll sleep outside under the stars on a simple mattress, with some bedding provided. If you do feel the cold, you should consider bringing a sleeping bag.
The walkways around many Egyptian ruins can be uneven, dusty and rocky, so be sure to bring comfortable walking shoes. At large sites such as Valley of the Kings, you can also expect to be walking in the elements for most of the day, so adequate sun protection is essential.
Some hotels in Egypt may not have lifts. You may need to climb stairs with your luggage to reach your hotel room for the night.
Temperatures in Egypt can be extreme, ranging from very hot to very cold, depending on the season – it can even snow in some places! Layers will come in handy for sun protection as well as warmth.
Overnight train journeys are a fast way to cross long distances, better for the environment and a great travel experience. You will share two-berth air-conditioned cabins, with all bedding provided and western style toilets on board.
