Trip Informations
Discover the country that encapsulates ‘pura vida’ (the simple life) on this 10-day exploration of Costa Rica. Perfect for all nature lovers and wildlife seekers, this trip will have you walking through the national parks of Arenal Volcano and Manuel Antonio for rainforest, waterfall and beach views and joining an Indigenous Terraba community to learn about local culture. Wander through the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, filled with butterflies. Visit an organic family-owned farm producing some of the best coffee in the world. And search for the resplendent quetzal (and maybe a cheeky sloth, too) in Quetzles National Park, getting off the tourist trail with a local naturalist guide.
Why you’ll love this trip
Wander through the incredible cloud forests of Monteverde – home to more than 100 species of mammals and over 400 species of birds – and the lesser-known Quetzales National Park, where you can look out for the iconic resplendent quetzal.
Visit a local indigenous community and meet the Terraba people – a matriarchal community who have lived along the Terraba River for the last 500 years – and learn how to make a traditional wooden mask.
Hike through the scenic landscapes of Manuel Antonio National Park with a local naturalist guide and learn all the hidden secrets of the rainforest, looking out for local wildlife like sloths and iguanas.
Tuck into a super fresh garden-to-table lunch of Costa Rican favourites, including fresh tortillas that you’ll learn how to make from a skilled local woman, with ingredients from her orchard.
Meet the family who run the Tierra Amiga organic coffee farm, and learn the whole process of the coffee bean, from planting to harvesting to tasting. Enjoy a cup fresh from the grinders and tuck into a locally made lunch.
Is this trip right for you?
Costa Rica can be an expensive destination in many ways, with so many fun optional activities to choose from and meals costing more than in other Central American countries. Your leader will be able to advise on how to have the best value holiday in Costa Rica.
Costa Rica is generally hot and humid year-round, and from May to October can be wet too. At nighttime and in locations at higher elevations it can get chilly. Protect yourself from the sun, bring light clothing you can layer and a waterproof jacket, and stay hydrated. Please carefully consider which time of the year you'll feel most comfortable travelling.
Having the best chance at spotting wildlife means walking through forests, often featuring uneven terrain and sometimes slippery trails. Be sure to wear the appropriate footwear.

Absolutely amazing! Our tour leader Kenneth was incredible, so full of passion for his country and an expert on local nature. We saw so much wildlife, up close and through guide’s scopes. The travel was very smooth and hotels were great. It was a very special trip.

Our guide, Berny made the trip! His knowledge about the local flora and fauna was excellent. His enthusiasm for nature is infectious. I saw so many things, I otherwise would not have if it wasn't for our guide and the other guides on the tours. Even our driver, Marcos, was excellent at spotting various wildlife. I made many great memories on this trip and I am very sad it is over. Overall, a great experience! Pura Vida!!

I cant imagine pulling together a complex trip like this on my own. Intrepid pulls together quite a complex web of logistical magic. The cameraderie and natural history and cultural exposure combined to make a wonderful experience!

Best of Costa Rica was my first experience with Intrepid Travel but won't be my last. Kudos to Eric Barquero who was the guide on this trip - he really made it memorable with his knowledge and enthusiasm. I also had a great group that made the trip wonderful.

This trip changed my life. I saw so much nature and wildlife in Costa Rica. Some examples: three types of monkeys, snakes, sloths, whales, quetzals, and anteaters. Allan was an exceptional leader. He is incredibly intelligent and insightful in all things Costa Rica. This trip is very wildlife focused, so be aware of that! The stay in Monteverde was my favorite. The road up to La Fortuna is a bit windy, so consider anti-nausea medication.

The Best of Costa Rica tour exceeded my expectations. The landscapes were breathtaking with endless greenery, volcanoes and waterfalls. My hope of seeing plenty if wildlife was fulfilled thanks to the wonderful guides without whom I would not have spotted provably 90% of what I saw - let alone gotten pics of them! The itinerary was a perfect combination of activity, culture and relaxation. The accommodation was great with the exception of the lodge in Monteverde which I did not think was at "comfort" level. Would highly recommend this tour.
