Trip Informations
Experience the charm of Central Europe on this 15-day, steady-paced adventure from Vienna to Budapest. Discover the hidden fairytale gem of Cesky Krumlov, hike the Tatra Mountains in Slovakia and step back in time as you walk the streets of Wroclaw. Spend a night at Vienna’s quirky Magdas Hotel, join your local leader on an orientation walk through Prague and indulge in coffee and cake at Vollpension – a local cafe that empowers older members of the community. Visit the classic Polish cities of Wroclaw and Krakow, join a guided tour of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum and round off your journey with free time to uncover Budapest’s eclectic neighbourhoods.
Why you’ll love this trip
Hike through the lesser-known Tatra Mountains in Slovakia. With a range of trails available, you’ll be high above the valley floor, admiring the views in no time.
See the classic Polish cities of Wroclaw and Krakow and feel the emotional wallop of a sobering visit to nearby Auschwitz.
Discover Cesky Krumlov on a guided tour around town with your small group. See medieval buildings, beautiful countryside and the flowing Vltava River.
Get the low-down on Budapest’s classic charm, cafe culture and eclectic neighbourhood vibes during your time here. Have you actually been to Budapest if you didn’t go to the ruin bars?
Savour the Viennese tradition of kaffee and kuchen (coffee and cake) at a cafe that empowers older locals by providing them with employment and fostering social connections.
Is this trip right for you?
Please keep your luggage as small and light as possible. You'll be travelling on public transport where storage space is limited. You'll need to be able to lift your luggage into storage racks, walk across cobblestone streets with it and carry it up and down stairs.
Don’t let the heat keep you from exploring the world! Summer temperatures can be very high in many of the regions visited (over 40°C), which can make things uncomfortable. It’s important to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat, and drink plenty of water.
If you have more time to explore the region you may want to check out our trip Journey through Central Europe & Romania (AMSCC). This trip heads further east and explores Romania and Bulgaria. Or you may want to consider our trip Vienna to Dubrovnik (AMSNC), continuing down the Balkans peninsula through Belgrade, Sarajevo and ending in Dubrovnik on the Adriatic Coast. Most departure dates are designed to create these perfect combos.

I learned so much about Central Europe on this trip. The trip was a great balance between smaller and bigger places, and between structured time and time to explore on your own. There were many opportunities to experience local foods and culture. Highly recommend!

I had a fantastic time on the Central Europe trip with Intrepid.. The itinerary was well organised and a great mix of iconic cities, local experience and enough free time to explore. Travelling in a small group made the experience much more enjoyable and I met some wonderful fellow travellers. Hotels were of a good standard, comfortable and well located. Our tour leader, Lilla was knowledgeable and organised, so our travels ran smoothly. One of the highlights for me was discovering just how much I loved Europe. Every destination had its own unique charm, history and culture. Thank you.

Another fantastic Intrepid trip. The itinerary was well balanced, with plenty of free time along with the organised activities and all the logistics were taken care of. Our guide was exceptional, knowledgeable and approachable and the tour attracted a great group of like minded travellers. I wouldn’t hesitate to travel with Intrepid again.

This was our second trip with Intrepid and while this was a totally different experience, it was just as great for different reasons. It was easy to travel between cities on public transport that was organised for us and then it was great having time to explore each of the destination cities at our own pace.

Really enjoyed this Central Europe tour, especially its rich and diversified culture. Many amazing castles and churches. Especially love Czech, Poland, and Slovakia. Definitely will want to visit Prague again and stay a bit longer.

This turned out to be a first part of a combo trip I booked as a single trip named central Europe and Balkans. Fast paced, minimal inclusions.. majority great accomodations..if you're sharing some hotels twin bed distances are minimal...many times without elevators. The experiences are varied from opportunities for museums and exploration to nature and hikes. Slovakia and český Krumlov my favorite stops.

I didn't know much about this region before the trip, but I'm so glad we picked it for our honeymoon. If you love history/folklore, music, visiting museums and castles, with a dash of breathtaking mountain scenery, you'll love this tour. Personally I thought it was the perfect mix of guided tours and free time, and two nights in each town worked well for me. They're not kidding about packing light, but it's not too hard to find laundromats so you can plan around that.

This was a brilliant trip, wish it was a bit longer. Poland was a highlight. Joanna was the best tour guide.
