Trip Informations
Why you’ll love this trip
Uncover Aymara culture at the Witches Market in La Paz – a vibrant hub where you can browse stalls selling a manner of all potions and watch spiritual healers perform traditional rituals.
Explore the elegant architecture, dinosaur footprints and hilly neighbourhoods dotted with terracotta roofs in Sucre – considered one of Bolivia’s prettiest cities.
Discover the Bolivian mining town of Potosi – once a hive of activity due to its nearby abundance of silver ore, and now a historical snapshot of small-town industry.
Take an unforgettable 4WD adventure across the Salar de Uyuni – some of the largest salt lakes in the world. Pass cactus islands, train cemeteries and mineral lakes teeming with flamingos.
Get to know Buenos Aires with plenty of time to explore. With eclectic neighbourhoods, fantastic food culture and renowned theatre scene, it’s the perfect place to spend a few days.
Is this trip right for you?
La Paz, Potosi and Uyuni all are located at high altitude. Even at 2900 metres above sea level, the air is a lot thinner and it can take a bit of time to adjust. Some people aren’t affected at all, but to be safe, be sure to drink plenty of water and take it easy. Although altitude sickness can affect anyone, it’s important that you’re healthy enough to travel, as pre-existing medical conditions can worsen at high altitude. During your trip, ensure you monitor your health carefully. It may even be a good idea to arrive into La Paz early so that you have time to acclimatise. Please see the ‘Health’ section of the Essential Trip Information.
Making your way across the Salar de Uyuni isn’t exactly luxurious. There will be long travel days spent in 4WDs which will likely have all seats occupied travelling on dusty and bumpy tracks. For the 4WD excursion you may share with people outside your group depending on your group composition. Temperatures can be very cold, especially at night, so bring warm clothes. Meals are simple, toilet facilities are basic, showers can be cold, and the multi- share accommodation is dormitory style. This is all part of the adventure. Without a doubt, this experience will be one of the highlights of your trip.
In Bolivia, facilities are basic and food might be simpler than what you’re used to. Transportation between different locations can be slow and isn’t as easy as it might be in other countries. This is all part of the ‘off-the-beaten-track’ adventure that makes Bolivia such a great place to visit.
There are some long travel days and an overnight bus journey on this trip. Although the buses feature comfortable reclining seats, they're not beds. There’s also usually a toilet on board, and some of the buses make toilet stops. These trips can be tiresome, but a trip in South America wouldn’t be complete without an overnight bus journey.
Itinerary
Uncover South America’s encapsulating interior
Explore two South American countries on a 15-day adventure that takes you deep into Bolivia and Argentina. Beginning in La Paz, journey from potion-filled markets through Sucre’s charming streets to the once-rich silver ore mines of Potosi. Then take on the Bolivian desert as you embark on a 4WD adventure across the surreal salt pans of Salar de Uyuni, winding up among the cactus-filled valleys of Bolivia’s wild west. Cross the border into Argentina to discover Indigenous cultures in Tilcara, then spend a few days in the fiery Argentinian capital of Buenos Aires – with plenty of freedom to make the adventure your own.

I would highly recommend visiting Bolivia - it’s a beautiful country with stunning views everywhere you look and La Paz is a fascinating city. Argentina is as equally interesting, with friendly locals and amazing food and wine.

If you are looking for an out of the box, authentically different cultural experience, consider doing The Best of Bolivia and Argentina tour. You won’t be disappointed. The 4WD across the Salt Flats and desert is a remarkable experience with the most amazingly beautiful scenery and so very different to other countries.

This trip was full of delightful new experiences. La Paz and Buenos Aires provided two very different and amazing city experiences, the smaller towns of Sucre, Potosi and Tilcara offered unexpected adventures in the mines and history laden sites. The ever changing dramatic landscapes of the Uyuni salt flats and desert, the geysers, the altiplano, colourful rainbow mountains and cactus islands were extraordinary - a real visual treat! Overall, a trip full of surprises, challenges and wonder!

My visit to Bolivia and Argentina has been unbelievable. The trip surpassed my expectations. This is due to a number of things including an amazing tour leader, great communication from start to finish with Intrepid, carefully thought through itineraries and meeting amazing people. This is my third Intrepid trip and I’m already booked for a fourth. Highly recommend.
