The Ocean Nova is an ice-strengthened ship – large, sturdy and suited to the unpredictable Antarctic waters. Some people may experience seasickness in occasional rough seas however, we do have a doctor on board should you need assistance. Over-the-counter seasickness medication is usually an easy fix.

Temperatures in the Antarctic can get very cold, but it also can get surprisingly warm when the sun comes out. We recommend dressing in layers when you journey outside. We’ll provide you with waterproof boots on loan that are sturdy and warm, as well as an inner jacket that is yours to keep. Please see the Essential Trip Information for notes on what to pack.

Depending on the weather, you’ll be travelling around in a Zodiac boat quite regularly to explore the area and search for wildlife. It can get cold and wet on the Zodiac, so make sure you dress appropriately and keep your camera safe and dry. A fair level of mobility is needed for wet and dry landings from the boat, as well as on steep terrain, snow and other uneven surfaces. As there is no lift on board, you'll also need to take stairs to get to the gangway and other parts of the ship.

The weather plays a pivotal part in this adventure and, although there’s an itinerary in place, there are no guarantees that you’ll be able to do everything that is planned. A level of flexibility and openness to embracing the unexpected are important in expedition travel, especially in such a remote area like the Antarctic. There are nearly 200 recognised sites in the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetlands and the places mentioned in the itinerary may need to be changed to other locations – which are just as interesting and beautiful! We may also be confined to the ship during rough weather, but there are plenty on onboard resources and activities.

What impressed me most was the passion and knowledge of the guides, one was getting her PHD in marine biology and several had worked in the northern attic as well. Since every trip is different due to weather and ice, we stopped at several places they hadn’t been before so an adventure for them too

Superlatives fail, photos flounder, senses and sense of scale can only be “understood “ with a visit- this was truly an Intrepid expedition - expert guides- experienced ship’s officers get us to places that leave you agog

If you have Antarctica on your bucket list go if you can and go with intrepid. They have the best combination of comfort combined with a sense of exploration. It matters not your age although you do need to leap into and out of zodiacs sometimes quite promptly but the staff are very diligent and are always there to offer assistance . As a healthy 78 year old I was able to enjoy all that the trip had to offer. The lectures complemented the activities well and the expedition team had a great depth of experience and knowledge. Being B corp certified was very important to me and I hope the company remains committed to these ideals! Thank you intrepid!!

Antarctica is a dramatic and pristine continent to visit. It is visually stunning and reinforces what a privilege it is to have such an unspoilt part of our planet that we can so readily visit for a brief period. The encounters with a variety of penguins is an experience in itself, but then you also get to see a variety of birds, seals and whales. Sitting down to dinner and having an announcement that there are orcas off the port side of the ship and everyone abandoning their dinner to go out into the cold to view this extraordinary sight was a memory in itself. The Intrepid Expedition Team and the Ocean Endeavour staff were excellent and made the trip so enjoyable. We would absolutely recommend this trip.

This 14-day expedition to Antarctica has been one of the best holidays of my life. Between the contagious excitement of my new-found friends (seriously met some of the best people on the planet here) and the excellent expedition crew and ship staff, we had an unforgettable adventure and were not ready to return back home. I cannot recommend highly enough the kayak option - it was such a unique and precious way to to experience the peninsula and I have such breathtaking moments from that program. Thank you, Intrepid crew and staff for such a lovely two weeks.

Ocean Endeavor voyage by Intrepid/Chimu to Antarctica was fabulous. We spent 7 full days at the Antarctic. Each day was full of amazing excursions along with educational opportunities. Staff were very knowledgeable and supportive Sightings of animals, icebergs, and sunsets were abundant. The sea was calm during most of our travel, which was a wonderful surprise and gift.
