Trip Informations
Mix medieval castles with underground absinthe bars on this eight-day adventure through Central Europe. Start strong with Berlin’s blend of historic sites and modern comforts before experiencing the unique landscape at Bastei. Head to Prague, a Bohemian cultural hub, and take in the beautiful city by day and the buzz of Old Town by night. Bratislava holds many old-world charms along with plenty of imaginative statues, and Budapest is packed with winding streets to explore. With plenty of free time at each stop and a leader on hand providing the know-how, you won’t be short of stories after this trip.
Why you’ll love this trip
Begin your adventure in Berlin – an exciting city with a complex history. In your own time, see the remaining fragments of the infamous wall that once divided the city, but now unites it with murals and memorials.
Take in some of Germany’s best views from the heights of Bastei – a towering sandstone formation home to a medieval castle.
Immerse yourself in the bohemian vibes of the Czech Republic, soak up the smooth sounds of jazz at a low-lit bar in Prague and sample locally made pilsners.
With plenty of free time in vibrant Budapest at the end of your trip, whether you end up taking a slow cruise down the Danube or downing a couple of local brews in a ruin bar is totally up to you!
Make cross-country travel a breeze with a European trip including train travel. Enjoy extra time to sit back, relax, play games with your fellow travellers or watch the changing scenery roll by.
By travelling on this trip, you’ll learn about our Tuuur Foundation partner, Cooperativa Coraggio. Donations help them regenerate 22 hectares of unused public land to create local jobs and produce organic food in Italy. Tuuur will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Tuuur Foundation.
Is this trip right for you?
This itinerary has a mix of included activities and free time when your leader will offer suggestions. Please budget spending money for optional activities you want to take part in.
A short hike is included on this trip from Rathen to Bastei (approximately 3-4 km return). It is an amazing place to discover on foot, but to do so you'll need a moderate level of fitness and suitable footwear and clothing. If trekking isn’t your thing, have no fear, as you'll have the option to explore Dresden or Rathen instead.
Accommodation on this trip is basic. Hotels in Europe often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together/apart. Rooms can be small, especially compared to American or Australian standards, and in most cases bathroom facilities will be shared rather than ensuite.
Summer temperatures can be very high in many of the regions visited (over 40°C), which can be uncomfortable. It’s important to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat, and drink plenty of water. Please keep in mind that many European hotel rooms are not equipped with air-conditioning. In Winter, warm layers will be needed as snow can be expected in some regions. Carefully consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.
The primary means of transportation on this trip is by train. Train travel is a fast way to traverse long distances, allowing you to avoid traffic jams and arrive right into the city centre. Trains are comfortable and often decked out with air-conditioning, toilets, a snack bar (or vending machine) and power points. You'll have to carry your own luggage on and off the train, as well as some short distances to the hotel (no longer than 30 minutes), so make sure it doesn’t exceed our weight and size recommendations. You can find details in the 'What to Take' section of the Essential Trip Information.
