Trip Informations
Step off the tourist trail on this insightful 15-day adventure through Benin, Togo and Ghana. Learn about the history and cultures of these three diverse West African countries, from Cape Coast Castle, which played a significant role in the transatlantic slave trade, to the ancient Vodun culture of Ouidah. Visit Accra's fantasy coffin makers, cruise along in traditional boats and journey through natural landscapes seldom explored by travellers. Hike up Mt Agou – Togo’s highest peak – and visit the Wli Waterfalls – the tallest in West Africa. Walk along Kakum National Park's canopy walkway and look out for the local monkeys. With a local leader by your side, you’ll get a glimpse into West African life.
Why you’ll love this trip
Hike in Ghana's Volta Region – home to lush farmlands, waterfalls and rolling hills – and in the Kpalime Region in Togo, surrounded by coffee and cocoa plantations.
Discover the sobering history of Ghana’s Slave Coast, with visits to coastal slave forts and castles including Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle.
Experience a Vodun ceremony, which showcases the traditional spiritual practices brought to the Americas by enslaved Africans. These practices merged with Indigenous and European religions, evolving into Voodoo in Louisiana, Hoodoo in the Dominican Republic and Vodou in Haiti.
Visit small villages and markets to gain insight into local life, cuisine and culture. Go on a boat tour of the Ganvie stilt village to see how locals live on the water.
Explore Accra, Ghana's capital. Go on a tasting tour in James Town, visit fantasy coffin makers to learn how the local people honour the dead and visit local homes and markets in Nima.
Is this trip right for you?
You’ll need to be moderately fit to enjoy the hikes on this trip. It will be hot and humid, so remember to bring a hat, sun protection, plenty of water and sturdy, comfortable walking shoes.
Tourism infrastructure in Benin, Togo and Ghana is still developing. In certain regions, electricity may only be available during specific hours. Hot water can be unreliable and wi-fi access is not widely available.
Temperatures in West Africa can be hot and humid year-round. Not all accommodation will have air conditioning, which is common across the region, especially in smaller guesthouses or remote locations where power supply may be limited. Be prepared for warm nights and pack light, breathable clothing.
No two journeys in Africa are identical. Be prepared for travel times to be longer or shorter than advised. Some drive days can be long, particularly when travelling to remote communities. Weather, traffic and road conditions can change things significantly, so embrace the unexpected and unforgettable moments along the way.
West Africa is relatively untouched by tourism, which in many ways is a good thing, but it also means you’ll need some patience and flexibility when travelling here. Hotel and service standards can be simpler and slower than you may be used to. Don’t expect a traditional touring experience.
Some of the places you’ll visit are remote, with limited access to medical facilities and emergency services. Outside major cities, medical facilities can be basic and it may take longer to reach appropriate medical care.
This trip includes two moderate hikes, including a 6.2-km hike to the summit of Mt Afadja, Ghana's highest peak. The hikes take place in hot and humid conditions and can involve steep, uneven terrain.
