Discover the 13th-century Turaida Castle on a guided tour, then wander through woodlands and along the winding Guaja River.

Is this trip right for you?
Please keep your luggage as small and light as possible. You'll be travelling on public transport where storage space is limited. You'll need to be able to lift your luggage into storage racks, walk across cobblestone streets with it and carry it up and down stairs.
Scandinavia can be an expensive destination in many ways, from museum entrance fees to optional activities, but especially in terms of eating out. Your leader will be able to advise on how to have the best value holiday in Scandinavia.
Space is at a premium in Europe and your hotel is no exception. Rooms are often small, but usually the central location makes up for that. For those travelling as a duo, hotels often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together. Occasionally bathrooms will be shared with other guests.
Many hotel rooms in Europe are not equipped with air-conditioning. Please carefully consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability for that season.
This trip is designed to give you a fair amount of free time so you can explore each destination at your own pace. We will, however, take you on regular orientation walks, so you'll be on your feet quite a lot. While this may be tiring for some, it’s the best way to get your head around a place and to set yourself up for further discoveries.
Make sure to check the weather for the time of year you wish to visit, as it can vary significantly depending on the season.
There are a few long days of travel by public transport (up to 7 hours), as you'll be covering a lot of ground. Please read the Itinerary carefully for travel time estimates.
If you have more time to explore the region you can extend your trip by starting your travels in either Copenhagen or Oslo. Check out our trips 'Scandinavia & Baltic Circuit' and 'Oslo to Vilnius'.

'The "Baltic States"- aren't they the same as "The Balkans"? That was one comment I received when I mentioned I had visited the Baltics. People may not know where the Baltics are but they should. This trip was a great mix of urban and rural experiences. We canoed down mirror-like streams and across lakes, walked along ancient battlements juxtaposed with remnants of the Soviet era, and washed down tasty local fare with kvass or balsam (local drinks). By-pass the crowds of central Europe and visit these amazing gems now.

I learned so much about the Baltics! Our leader (Jelizaveta) was knowledgeable, professional, and extremely organized. The travelers were a lovely group! The use of public transport and opportunities to navigate cities independently helped to develop skills for future travel. Thank you, Intrepid!

This was a truly excellent introduction to the Baltic States. The trip was varied - mostly city based but a few days in the countryside as well. We learned a lot about the history and culture of the countries we visited. Our trip leader was absolutely fantasic. I would definitely recommend this to anyone visiting the Baltics for the first time.

Brilliant tour. Perfect mix of different sized cities, cultures and foods, plus interwoven with gorgeous natural environments. The guesthouse stay is an absolute highlight, and the activities and special sites really exceed expectations. Loved every single part of this trip. One of the best I have done with Intrepid.
